Game 2 and promotions (not the ones on the field)

I’m real happy for Matt Sheely.  He was a 48th round draft pick and has been a 4th outfielder for most of his professional career. With all the injuries to the big league club, Sheely earned a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket and has hit safely in two straight games, going 3-for-8.  We’ll keep you posted on his progress.

Notes for tonight’s game in Trenton:

ROAD WOES…NO WAY: Portland won their fourth straight road game, taking the series opener
from the Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate), 3-2 on Thursday night at
Waterfront Park…1B Lars Anderson snapped
a 1-1 tie with a two-out homer in the eighth inning off losing pitcher RHP Noel Castillo…3B Ray Chang followed with a solo-homer down the left-field line, his
first home run in the Red Sox system…RHP Robert
(2-1) earned the win and RHP Bryce
allowed a homer in the ninth but notched his first save of the year.


GOING DEEP: Portland hit back-to-back
homers for the first time this year and for the first time since 2008…Aaron Bates and Mark Wagner went back-to-back on June 27, 2008 (4th inning)
against the Trenton Thunder at Hadlock Field…Anderson leads the team with four
homers and 11 RBI.


RHP Eammon Portice made a spot-start
last night due to back-to-back rainouts last week at Hadlock Field…Portice
retired the first 11 batters before C Austin
singled in the fourth inning…The righty finished his performance,
allowing just two hits, one run, no walks and three strikeouts…Trenton scored
that run in the fifth inning on 1B Kevin
run-scoring double.


COELLO IS SPELLING RELIEF: Coello pitched three hitless innings, recording a
season-high five strikeouts…The right-hander entered the game in the sixth
inning and walked the first batter faced (Austin
…Coello finished the outing by retiring nine straight and fanned the side
in the seventh inning.


C/INF Will Vazquez made his Double-A
debut as a pinch-hitter for OF Chih-Hsien
in the ninth inning on Wednesday…Vazquez was assigned to Portland when
OF Matt Sheely being promoted to
Triple-A Pawtucket…Sheely has made consecutive starts for Pawtucket, going a
combined 3-for-8.


SS Jose Iglesias had the team’s
first 3-hit game of the season on Thursday…Iglesias snapped an 0-for-7 slump in
the second inning with his first professional triple…He added singles in the
fifth and sixth innings and finished 3-for-4…Iglesias leads the team with four
multi-hit games.
