Saturday news and notes
It’s a beautiful day for a ballgame at Hadlock Field, the ‘Dogs and ‘Cats getting ready for game 2 of their 3-game series.
My view from the booth
WAY TO BREAK OUT: The Sea Dogs scored a season-high 13 runs on 15 hits
to beat the New Britain Rock Cats (Twins affiliates) 13-4 on Friday night at
Hadlock Field…Portland scored 10 runs in the seventh inning on four hits and
seven walks…1B Will Vazquez pick up the
game-winning RBI with a single in the seventh inning off RHP Chris Province…C Luis Exposito cleared the bases with a triple and SS Yamaico Navarro went 2-for-5, 2 RBI and
a triple…RHP Ryne Lawson (1-2) earned
his first win of the season in relief of RHP Stephen Fife.
SEE MULTIPLE: 2B Nate Spears, CF Che-Hsuan Lin, Exposito, Navarro, SS Jose Iglesias and Vazquez all had multi-hit games…RF Ryan Kalish, Exposito, Navarro and
Vazquez each had multiple RBI performances…Portland scored 11 runs off New
Britain’s bullpen, including six off Province in just 1/3 of an inning…LHP Joe Testa (0-3) faced just three
batters (two walks and a single) to take the loss for New Britain.
THAT WAS NUMBER TWO: Fife recorded the team’s second quality start of the
season, allowing just three hits and one earned run (two overall) over six
frames…The righty’s homerless streak was snapped at 17 IP when 3B Juan Portes’ clocked a 2-out solo-homer
in the third inning.
THEY’VE DONE IT BEFORE: The franchise record for most runs scored in an
inning is 14 set by the 2003 Portland Sea Dogs…Last April 26, Portland scored
10 runs in one frame against Connecticut at Hadlock Field…In 2008, the ‘Dogs
scored 10 runs against the Rock Cats at Hadlock Field and in 2006 Portland
scored 11 times in one inning against New Hampshire.
UST KEEPS REACHING BASE: C Juan Apodaca
went 1-for-3 last night and has reached base safely in all seven games…Apodaca
is hitting .391 (9-for-23) with a homer and 2 RBI in five starts behind the
plate and two as the designated hitter…Iglesias is hitting .370 (10-for-27)
over his last 7 starts with four multi-hit games.
OUTFIELDER RETURNS: OF Matt Sheely
was reassigned to Portland today from Triple-A Pawtucket…Sheely hit .222 (4-for-18)
with an RBI in 7 games with the PawSox…Portland was short one player on the
roster due to 1B Lars Anderson’s
promotion to Pawtucket two days ago.
