Series not done yet

Back in Maine

It’s a Friday afternoon, and the Sea Dogs will open up a four-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats at Hadlock Field, game time is 7:00 PM.  Portland is 10-2 against the Rock Cats, but lost 2 of 3 to New Britain in their previous series.  The Rock Cats made a bunch of roster moves before the series at Portland, vastly improving their team.

Just to clear up last night’s game, since there was some confusion on what could have happened when the game was delayed.  Since the game was official, the statistics count for the time being, but obviously no win/loss stats have been added to the official stats.  I’m not sure why they do this?  Our stats show the Sea Dogs have played 46 games, but a record of 23-21.
-If Portland did not score in the top of the sixth inning, the Phillies would have won the game 4-2
-Portland is still batting in the top of the sixth inning when play resumes at Hadlock Field on June 4th and Reading will still be the home team for the remainder of the contest.  This is very strange, since they could have a walk-off win at our park.
-Also, the rule book stats that games have to be completed, so they don’t wipe out innings anymore.  Had that been the last meeting between the two teams, well, I have an e-mail to MILB about that one.
-So, if Portland were to win the next seven games, leading up to the suspended game, they’ll show a 7-game winning streak in the standings, but if they finish off that win in the suspended game, they’ll have an 8-game streak…very confusing.
Notes for today:

HELD IN SUSPENSE: The Sea Dogs did not end a 3-game losing streak last
night in Reading due to a suspended game caused by wet grounds with the
Phillies …Portland took a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a 2-run
single by 2B Nate Spears, but the
rain hit FirstEnergy Stadium, causing a one hour and 10 minute rain delay, and
forcing a suspended game to be resumed on June 4th when Reading
returns to Hadlock Field…The Sea Dogs were trailing after five innings 4-2, but
scored four runs with two outs.

THEY COUNT: Last
night’s statistics count and will be adjusted when the two teams finish the
remainder of the suspended game next week…RHP Stephen Fife is in line for his third win of the season if Portland
holds on for the win…Fife worked five innings, allowing four hits, four runs
(three earned), three walks and two strikeouts…The righty has worked at least
five innings in four consecutive starts.

THAT WAS THE FIRST: Portland had not lost on a walk-off win this season
until Wednesday games…The ‘Dogs suffered their first defeat when leading after
eight innings (16-1)…Reading clinched the season-series with their win and game
three, and have won six straight against the ‘Dogs at FirstEnergy Stadium…The
suspended game at Hadlock Field will count as a road game for Portland, the two
teams will play a twinbill the following day, and then a day game on June 6th.

DOMINATED BY PITCHING: Portland has dropped six of their last seven road
games, and will finish May under .500 away from Hadlock Field…Breakdown of the
last seven road starts by the opponent: May 13 RHP Bobby Bell (7 IP, 6 H, 2 R), May 14 LHP Luis Perez (7 IP, 4 H, R), May 15 RHP Kyle Drabek (7 IP, 6 H, 0 R), May 16 RHP Randy Boone (5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R), May 24 LHP Yohan Flande (7 IP, 6 H, R), RHP Drew Naylor (9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 6 SO) and RHP Vance Worley (7 IP, 6 H, 2 R)…Over the past 10 road games, the opponents
starters have posted these numbers
: 5-0, 1.19 ERA (68 IP, 52 H, 10 R,
9 ER, 24 BB, 37 SO)

WE PLAY THEM AGAIN? Portland and New Britain begin their fourth series of
the season…The ‘Dogs won the first 10 games until the Rock Cats grabbed wins of
4-3 (10-innings) and 6-2 to take two of three from Portland on May 18-20…Tonight’s
starter RHP Robert Coello has two
wins against New Britain.
