Doubront Set to Make Big League

On Friday June 18th, just 71 days after taking
the ball on Opening Day for the Portland Sea Dogs against the Reading
Phillies, Felix Doubront will make his Major League debut at Fenway Park
against the Los Angeles Dodgers. With Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day
Disabled List with a strained right forearm, the Red Sox opted to call
on Doubront, the Sea Dogs’ 2009 Pitcher of the year.

To Sea Dogs fans, the jump this season from Double-A to the Big Leagues
should come as no surprise, having watched Doubront baffle Eastern
League hitters in each of the past two seasons. When he does make the
start Friday night, Doubront will join the likes of Clay Buchholz,
Jonathan Papelbon, and Justin Masterson, who are among the ten pitchers
who have made the leap from pitching with the Sea Dogs to starting for
the Red Sox in the same season.

Doubront, who was ranked as the No. 2 left-handed pitching prospect in
the Red Sox system according to Baseball America at the start of the
season, has been on a tear through the minor leagues in 2010. He was
unbeaten in eight starts with Double-A Portland, posting a 4-0 record
and a 2.51 ERA. Doubront’s last start with the Sea Dogs was perhaps his
best of the 2010 season, as he tossed seven shutout innings to pick up
the win against the New Britain Rock Cats.

Doubront has continued to roll since he was called up to Triple-A
Pawtucket on May 23rd. In four starts with the Pawsox, Doubront is 2-1
with a myopic 1.08 ERA and has 16 strikeouts in 16.2 innings of work.
Combined between Portland and Pawtucket in this season, Doubront is
sporting an impressive 6-1 record with a 2.11 ERA.

As a Spring Training Invitee and a member of the Red Sox 40-Man Roster
in 2010, the organization saw the potential for Doubront to make an
impact in a Boston uniform this season. Although Doubront is only
22-years old, the seeds for this start were planted back in 2004, when
Doubront was signed by the Red Sox as a 16-year old international free
agent out of his native Carabobo, Venezuela.

Although this will be Doubront’s Major League Debut, it will not be his
first time taking the mound at Fenway Park. Last August, Doubront got
the start for the Sea Dogs in the annual ‘Futures at Fenway’ event at
Fenway. Doubront tossed five solid innings against the Bowie Baysox
allowing two runs on four hits and striking out seven.

Now, six years and seven Red Sox affiliates since joining the
organization, Doubront will enjoy what he hopes to be the first of many
starts for the Boston Red Sox. In making the leap from Portland to
Boston in the same season he will be in select company, becoming the
first since Junichi Tazawa did so in 2009. The rapid rise of Doubront
just serves as a reminder to pay close attention the next time you are
at Hadlock Field, with 10 Double-A to Major League pitching jumps in
seven years you never know who might wind up in Boston later on that
very season.

Players who have pitched for the Portland Sea Dogs and started a game

Devern Hansack 2006
