WILSON WANTS THREE: Alex Wilson takes the mound today in search of his third win in as many starts this year…Wilson and Stephen Fife are the only Sea Dog starters with wins, having recorded victories in both of their respective outings…After two turns through the rotation, Wilson is the only starter with a quality start (worked 6 scoreless frames in his previous start).
COMEBACK FALLS SHORT: The Sea Dogs rallied with four runs in the fifth and another in the ninth, but couldn’t come all the way back in a 6-5 loss to the Binghamton Mets last night…Tim Federowicz led Portland with three hits and two RBI…Federowicz doubled to put runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth, but John Lujan got Ryan Lavarnway to fly out and end the game.
QUITE A START: Quincy, Massachusetts native Alex Hassan has hit safely in all ten starts, going 18-for-38 (.474)…Hassan has a 12-game hitting streak dating back to last season in the Carolina League with the Salem Red Sox…Hassan kept the streak going last night in his last at-bat, delivering an RBI single with two outs in the top of the ninth.
SLUGGING THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS: In addition to Hassan’s hot start, Federowicz and Will Middlebrooks have also gotten off to great starts…All three are among the Eastern League’s top ten hitters with better than a .350 average…Hassan (10) and Federowicz (9) are also near the top of the leaderboard in RBIs.
RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY: With yesterday’s 32-minute rain delay prior to first pitch, Portland has now had three games affected by weather…The Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder will make up a rainout on May 28th with a doubleheader, and the ‘Dogs and New Britain Rock Cats also need to schedule a doubleheader after Saturday’s rainout.
NOW YOU SEE ME, NOW YOU DON’T: One of the biggest strengths of Portland’s offense in the first 10 games has been their speed…Portland is 12-for-13 in steals on the year…The team was 9-for-9 in stolen bases until Che-Hsuan Lin was caught stealing third base in the third game of the season…Lin stole his team-leading 3rd base of the season on Sunday…Portland’s catchers are a combined 5-for-17 (29%) throwing out attempted base stealers.
WHAT’S ON DECK: Tomorrow, the Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets play game two of their 3-game series from NYSEG Stadium…After Wednesday’s game, the Sea Dogs return home for a 7-game homestand in eight days…The entire Eastern League is off on Sunday for the Easter Holiday…Portland and New Britain open up a 3-game series on Thursday night.
