GUESS THEY EARNED IT: Portland’s pitchers allowed three unearned runs and Austin Krum ended the game with a great diving catch, as Trenton beat the Sea Dogs 5-3 in the series opener on Monday night…Trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning, Chih-Hsien Chiang clubbed a 2-run homer to right field, his first homer of the season…Alex Hassan knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the third…Trenton’s bullpen worked four scoreless innings on 1 hit, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.
BEEN HOT (TOVY) AND COLD: Tommy Hottovy improved his team-high scoreless streak to 11 innings with his 2.1 inning-stint on Saturday night…Hottovy has given up only one run this season, which came in his first appearance of the year…The lefty is the only six-year player in franchise history…Santo Luis allowed two runs Saturday, including 3 wild pitches, and has given up two runs in back-to-back outings…Portland’s bullpen went 0-2, 3.54 ERA in April, allowing 32 runs in 81.1 IP.
APRIL REVIEW: Portland’s 8-11 record (7-5 at home, 1-6 on the road) was their worst opening month since the 2004 squad dropped 13 of 20 games in April…The Sea Dogs finished the month with a .288 average, 4.43 ERA and committed 11 errors in 19 games (best defense in the league)…Last year, the Sea Dogs went 11-9 in April, but won 8 of 13 on the road.
KEEPS GETTING ON BASE: Che-Hsuan Lin is hitting .296 over his last 14 games, going 16-for-54…Lin has reached base safely in 17 of 20 starts and 120 of 139 Double-A games since 2010…Hassan has a hit in 19 of 21 games in Double-A, and leads the Eastern League in average (.412), hits (31) and on-base percentage (.495)…Last night, the Massachusetts native went 1-for-2.
