Portland Sea Dogs (11-20) at New Britain Rock Cats (19-13)

Last night was probably the weirdest game I’ve ever seen.  I was thinking earlier today, it would have made more sense if that game was today – since it’s Friday the 13th.  The Sea Dogs lost 10-9, but made 5 errors, hit into a franchise-record 6 double plays, and still had a chance to win the game.  There was only one unearned run in the game, and Portland’s lead of 6-2 after 1 1/2 innings did not hold up.  Give the Rock Cats credit, they battled, and scored in the first five innings, and eight times off losing pitcher Brock Huntzinger.

Tommy Hottovy might be going to Hollywood.  Check out this video of the bullpen’s new mascot and friend.  This video has over 7,000 hits on YouTube, and has been featured on websites and TV News Programs all over the country.

Portland is 3-13 on the road, and continues their 8-game roadtrip tonight…Below are some notes for today…

FIRST TIME AROUND: Tonight, the Sea Dogs and Rock Cats (Twins affiliate) meet in the second of their five-game series…Alex Wilson makes his second straight start against New Britain, he took a no-decision last Sunday against the ‘Cats at Hadlock Field…On the other side, Bobby Lanigan makes his fourth start (2-1, 3.38 ERA) against Portland, and his second straight against Wilson.

HEARTBREAKER: Che-Hsuan Lin grounded into an inning-ending double play, the sixth by the Sea Dogs, to give the Rock Cats a 10-9 win last night…The two sides combined for 26 hits, 14 walks and 42 baserunners…Neither starting pitcher made it through the fourth inning as Brock Huntzinger was hit with his fourth loss of the season, yielding a team-high in hits (9) and runs (8)…Daniel Osterbrock (ND) allowed seven runs on six hits in only three innings of work…The six double plays hit into by Portland was a franchise history.

TWIN KILLINGS: Five different players combined to hit into the franchise-record six double plays last night…Oscar Tejeda hit one in the first and the seventh…Ryan Lavarnway hit one in the second…Jorge Padron’s came in the fifth, Tim Federowicz’s in the sixth, and Lin’s in the ninth ended the game with the tying run on third base…Portland leads the Eastern League with 36 twin killings hit into this season…Federowicz is tied for first in the league with eight double plays on his record.

QUICK START: After scoring just three runs in the three games in New Hampshire, the Sea Dogs matched that effort through the first five batters of last night’s game…Lin walked to open the contest, scoring on Alex Hassan’s double…Lavarnway reached on an error before Federowicz lined out…Then, Will Middlebrooks hit a three-run homer to make it 4-0 Portland.

SLUMP SNAPPED?: Alex Hassan had been just 3-for-26 (.115) in his last six games, but went 3-for-3 last night, reaching all five times he came to the plate…Hassan hurdled New Britain’s Yangervis Solarte and is now back on top of the Eastern League with a .369 average…Hassan once again holds the claim to the best average in all of Double-A…He still leads the league with a .471 on-base percentage…Hassan is third in the Eastern League with 21 walks.
