Sea Dogs can make it four straight with a win tonight

WELCOME TO THE WEST: Portland came away with a 7-2 victory last night over the Altoona Curve in its first game against a Western Division opponent…The Sea Dogs were just 1-5 last year against the Curve…Last night started a stretch of 15 straight games for Portland against teams from the West.

 

WE’RE GOING STREAKING: The Sea Dogs have a three-game win streak for the second time this season…Portland took three straight over the Binghamton Mets from April 26-28 at Hadlock Field…The three straight road wins matches their win total away from home for the entire season…The Sea Dogs had been 3-21 on the road entering Wednesday night’s game in New Britain, including losses in their last ten.

BREAKING OUT: Chih-Hsien Chiang led the way last night going 4-for-5 with two singles, a triple, and a solo home run, his seventh of the year…Chiang is now among the Eastern League’s top ten in hitting at .313 (9th)…He also leads the EL with a .601 slugging percentage and is fourth with 24 extra-base hits on the year…On the roadtrip, Chiang is 10-for-20 with four extra-base hits and 3 RBI.

 

JEREMY RULES: Jeremy Hazelbaker and Jeremy Kehrt (both Indiana natives) also factored into the win last night…Hazelbaker led off the game with a home run, his first in Double-A…It was the first leadoff home run for a Portland player since Ryan Kalish did it last year on Opening Day…He later added a two-run double for a season-high 3 RBI on the night…Kehrt pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing just one unearned run to pick up his first win of the season.

 

JUNE IS FINALLY HERE: Since turning the calendar, Portland is 3-0 in the month of June…After Tuesday’s losses, the Sea Dogs suffered their worst month in franchise history with their 25th loss…2003: 12-21 in August and 2002: 10-21 in June…Portland finished 6-25 in May.

 

CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL: Ryan Lavarnway has hit safely in 15 of 17 games, going 24-for-63 (.381) with 6 homers and 13 RBI…Lavarnway is second in the league with 12 homers, two behind Reading’s Cody Overbeck…He is third in the league, averaging a long ball once every 15 at-bats…Portland’s 40 homers is fourth in the league.

 

WHAT’S ON DECK: Tomorrow night the Sea Dogs and Curve conclude their three-game series with a 6:00 PM start…Portland has Monday off and returns to Hadlock Field on Tuesday night to start a six-game homestand with the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants affiliate) and the Bowie Baysox (Orioles affiliate).
