WHAT A WAY TO START: The Portland Sea Dogs and Reading Phillies open up the 2012 season with a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon from First Energy Stadium…The two teams play four games in three days, and share Easter off with the rest of the Eastern League…Portland finished 2011 with the worst record in the league at 59-83, the R-Phils posted a 74-68 mark, clinching the second playoff spot in the Eastern Division, but lost in the playoffs to New Hampshire 3 games to 1.

 

LET’S START THE SHOW: The Sea Dogs are 9-9 All-Time in season openers, including, consecutive Opening Day wins over Reading…Last year, the Sea Dogs beat Reading at Hadlock Field 4-3…In 2010, Ryan Kalish led off the season with a homer, and the first 4 batters in the lineup hit homers: Kalish, C Luis Exposito, CF Che-Hsuan Lin and 2B Nate Spears.

 

INTRODUCING THE TEAM + ONE: Eastern League rosters expanded to 25 players this season from the maximum of 24 last year…Portland has 18 players, who spent time in the Maine last season and one on Boston’s 40-man roster: OF Oscar Tejeda, who has never played in the outfield during his professional career (512 games)…RHP Billy Buckner is the only Sea Dog with Major League experience, accumulating 36 appearances with Arizona and Kansas City…RHP Aaron Kurcz was part of the Theo Epstein compensation, and will be part of Portland’s bullpen.

Top Prospects on Portland’s roster according to Baseball America: Bryce Brentz (# 5 – Top outfield prospect), Kolbrin Vitek (# 19), Stolmy Pimentel (# 23, on the DL), Oscar Tejeda (# 24), Derek Gibson (# 25) and Heiker Meneses (#30)…Brentz, Gibson an Vitek will be making their Double-A debuts.

NEW ADDITION TO THE STAFF: Kevin Boles returns to Portland for his second season as manager of the Sea Dogs…Boles served as the Portland bullpen catcher in 1997, and his father John Boles is a member of the Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame…Hitting coach Dave Joppie and Pitching coach Bob Kipper return to Portland…The Sea Dogs have a new training staff: Head Athletic Trainer Brandon Henry, Assistant Trainer: Darren Yoos and Strength and Conditioning Coach: Drew Henley…Henley is the first Strength and Conditioning coach in franchise history.

 

WHAT’S ON DECK: The four-game series in three days continues tomorrow night at 7:05 PM, and wraps-up Saturday with a 6:05 PM start…Portland is off for Easter Sunday, and continues their opening roadtrip of the season on Monday night in Trenton (Yankees affiliate).
