BRING ON THE DIFFERENT FOES: After last night’s rainout, the Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets start a four game, three-day weekend series…It is just the second time in over a month that the Sea Dogs aren’t playing the Trenton Thunder or New Hampshire Fisher Cats (7/16-7/18 vs. Reading)…The ‘Dogs have not fared well against the B-Mets winning three of the 11 matchups so far…The two teams have eight games remaining in the season series.
THUNDER BRING THE BOOMSTICKS IN 4-2 FINALE WIN (Wednesday): The Trenton Thunder upped its league-leading home run total to 125 and scored all of their runs on two homers in the 4-2 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in the season finale between the two teams…Jason Urquidez took the hill in his second career start and gave the ‘Dogs five strong innings…Zoilo Almonte tagged a solo shot off the righty in the fourth to put the Thunder up 1-0, but that is all Urquidez allowed in his outing…Portland tied the game in the sixth when Bryce Brentz hit the fourth straight single to start the inning and plated Jeremy Hazelbaker with the team’s first run…Ryan Pressly was first out of the ‘pen and gave up a three-run blast to Neil Medchill that put the Thunder out in front for good…The ‘Dogs tried to rally and scored a run in the ninth, but that was all they could muster off of Kelvin Perez…Michael Olmsted made his Double-A debut and pitched two scoreless with 3Ks a hit and a walk.
PITCHING HELPING THE WAY: Over the last six games, the Portland bullpen has been outstanding and has allowed just seven runs over 32 innings (1.97 ERA)…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 73 of their last 88 innings pitched…Since the All-Star break, they’ve compiled a 3.08 ERA (46 ER/134.2 IP).
JEREMY IN QUITE THE HAZE: Jeremy Hazelbaker was honored as the Eastern League Player of the Week for last week and tabbed as the minor league base runner of the month for June in the Red Sox organization…Since June 1st the outfielder is hitting .267, with 12 homers, 35 RBI, 10 doubles, two triples, and 15 steals in 20 chances…Last week he hit .417, 2 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 10 R.
FIELDS IS ON FIRE: Josh Fields has been the team’s top reliever since June 13th…He had a season-high five strikeouts last night…Last 12 outings: 2-0-4, 0.43 ERA (ER/21.0 IP), 5 H, 2 R, ER, 5 BB, 27 SO…Has a strikeout in 27 of 30 appearances.
WHAT’S ON DECK: Portland continues a four-game weekend series against the Binghamton Mets with game three tomorrow at 7:05 PM…This marks the final series at NYSEG stadium…The ‘Dogs have a six game homestand waiting on the other side with the Akron Aeros (Indians affiliate) and the Erie SeaWolves (Tigers affiliate).
