Notes, Lineups…Not in a New York State of Mind

New York State of Mind was a hit by Billy Joel….New York has not been a hit for Portland, they’re 0-6 in Binghamton this season.

So many New York tie-ins, I couldn’t pass it up for today’s blog…The Red Sox lost 10-3 at Yankee Stadium last night and the Sea Dogs are playing their second straight series against a New York affiliate.  Portland is 10-28 against the New York affiliates (Trenton and Binghamton) this season, and haven’t won a game at NYSEG Stadium.  Despite last night’s doubleheader sweep, the ‘Dogs are 11-6 since the All-Star break.

BRING ON THE DIFFERENT FOES: The Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets continue a four game, three-day weekend series with game three tonight…It is just the second time in over a month that the Sea Dogs aren’t playing the Trenton Thunder or New Hampshire Fisher Cats (7/16-7/18 vs. Reading)…The ‘Dogs have not fared well against the B-Mets winning three of the 13 matchups so far…The two teams have six games remaining in the season series.

B-METS STING ‘DOGS IN DOUBLE DIP 2-1, 3-1: The Binghamton Mets swept away the Portland Sea Dogs in a doubleheader Friday night at NYSEG Stadium…Game 1: The B-Mets notched a run in the third and fourth innings respectively and survived a Sea Dogs threat in the seventh to hang on and win 2-1…Zach Gentile brought home the lone run for Portland with an RBI single in the fifth inning to cut the deficit in half at 2-1…Drake Britton allowed two runs on seven hits, he walked three and struck out seven over five innings…Cory Mazzoni shut down the Sea Dogs over the first six frames and handed things over to major leaguer Frank Francisco who locked it down for the save and the win…Game 2: The Binghamton Mets took game two 3-1 with a little late inning magic over the Portland Sea Dogs…Dustin Martin hit a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Mets up 3-1 for good…Bryce Brentz hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the second inning for Portland’s lone run…Darin Gorski delivered six strong innings and took home the win.

PITCHING HELPING THE WAY: Over the last eight games, the Portland bullpen has been outstanding and has allowed just eight runs over 34 innings (2.11 ERA)…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 82 of their last 100 innings pitched…Since the All-Star break, they’ve compiled a 3.14 ERA (51 ER/146.2 IP).

STEADY GOES SMITH: Marquez Smith has played in forty games with the Sea Dogs and has been outstanding in his time…The infielder is hitting .306 (48-for-157) with three home runs and 20 RBI…Smith has compiled a .362 on-base percentage and is slugging .465 with Portland.

FIELDS IS ON FIRE: Josh Fields has been the team’s top reliever since June 13th…He had a season-high five strikeouts on July 24th vs. Trenton…Last 12 outings: 2-0-4, 0.43 ERA (ER/21.0 IP), 5 H, 2 R, ER, 5 BB, 27 SO…Has a strikeout in 27 of 30 appearances.
