IN A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND: The Sea Dogs ended a six-game losing streak at NYSEG Stadium with last night’s win, and look for the four-game series split against the Mets on Sunday afternoon…Binghamton clinched the season series by taking both games of Friday night’s doubleheader…The two teams have more one more series, a four-game set at Hadlock Field on August 23-26.
SCORING EARLY DID THE TRICK: Portland scored three runs in the first inning and received a strong pitching performance from Jeremy Kehrt (5-3), Michael Olmsted and Josh Fields in a 5-1 victory over Binghamton ton Saturday. The top four batters in Portland’s lineup reached to start the game off losing pitcher Greg Peavey (4-7). Jackie Bradley Jr. led off the game with a walk and scored on Jeremy Hazelbaker’s team-leading 17th homer of the season. Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled home Marquez Smith, who nailed a double down the left-field line. Smith drove in Portland’s final two runs with a sac-fly in the second and fifth innings. Kehrt earned the win, hurling 5.2 innings on five hits, one un, one walk and four strikeouts. Olmsted fanned five over two scoreless frames and Fields wrapped up the win by retiring the final four batters.
PITCHING HELPING THE WAY: Over the last nine games, the Portland bullpen has been outstanding and has allowed just eight runs over 39.1 innings (1.93 ERA)…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 90 of their last 109 innings pitched…Since the All-Star break, they’ve compiled a 3.01 ERA (52 ER/155.2 IP)…Stolmy Pimentel looks for his second straight win and the first of his Double-A career against Binghamton.
STEADY GOES SMITH: Smithhas played in 41 games with the Sea Dogs and made his first start as the DH on Saturday…The infielder is hitting .308 (49-for-159) with three home runs and 22 RBI…Smith has hit safely in 10 of his last 13 starts:19-for-52 (.365), 2 HR, 10 RBI, 3B, 6 2B
FIELDS IS ON FIRE: Fields has been the team’s top reliever since June 13th…He had a season-high five strikeouts on July 24th vs. Trenton…Last 13 outings: 2-0-4, 0.40 ERA (ER/22.1 IP), 5 H, 2 R, ER, 5 BB, 28 SO…Has a strikeout in 28 of 31 appearances…Olmsted joined Fields and Kurcz as the three pitchers who have recorded five strikeouts in relief.
WHAT’S ON DECK: Portland is off tomorrow and opens up a six-game homestand on Tuesday night with the first of three-games against the Akron Aeros (Indians affiliate)…On Friday night, the Erie SeaWolves (Tigers affiliate) make their only appearance in Maine to start a three-game weekend series.
