Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats, yes again!

MOVING ON FROM A GREAT HOMESTAND: After a 6-2 homestand, Portland hits the road for four games against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats…The ‘Dogs have taken 11 of 18 from the ‘Cats this year…Portland concluded their homestand on Wednesday afternoon with a 12-0 win in the series finale against the Reading Phillies…The Sea Dogs put together back-to-back shutouts (7-0, 12-0 vs. Reading) for the first time since June 13 (3-0 at Akron) + June 15 (1-0 vs. Erie) and enter tonight’s game with 20 scoreless innings.

KEHRT PERFECT, HAZELBAKER ON FIRE IN 12-0 WIN: Jeremy Kehrt pitched five perfect innings and Jeremy Hazelbaker went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI in the Sea Dogs 12-0 win over the Reading Phillies…Hazelbaker put Portland in front with a two-run opposite field home run in the first inning…Marquez Smith added a three-run home run in the fifth, and the rout was on…Kehrt began the game by retiring the first fifteen hitters in a row, before being lifted after the fifth…Chris Balcom-Miller pitched a perfect sixth, but allowed a leadoff single in the seventh to break up the perfect game bid…Haze was at it again in the sixth with a three-run opposite field homer.

SOMETIMES STEALING IS OKAY: Portland tied a franchise record with six stolen bases on Tuesday night…They last accomplished the feat as a Marlins affiliate on May 11, 2002…Breakdown of the stolen bases: Hazelbaker and Peter Hissey (two apiece) Jackie Bradley Jr. (#4) and Bryce Brentz (#5)…The Sea Dogs are 69 for 103 in stolen base attempts this season…Harrisburg leads the Eastern League with 99 steals.

TOP OF THE ORDER HAS BEEN TOP NOTCH: Over the three-game series with the Reading Phillies, four players hit in the top three places in the order and combined to go 16-for-37 (.432) with four home runs, 14 RBI, 16 runs scored, five doubles, and two triples. Smith and Hazelbaker have led the charge over the three games with 12 of the 16 hits.

MONTHLY DAP: The Boston Red Sox awarded RHP Brock Huntzinger (two perfect inning last night)with Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors and Hazelbakerwith Minor League Base Runner of the Month honors for the month of June…Huntzinger went 1-0, 1.80 ERA and two saves in 9 games in June…Hazelbaker hit .284 with 5 HR, 22 RBI, 6 2B, 9 BB and 7 SB and has reached base safely in 11 of his last 12 plate appearances.

The first Mainer in franchise history Mike MacDonald, earned the win for Portland last night.

MACDONALD WAS THE MAINE MAN: Camden, Maine native Mike MacDonald (1-0) tossed seven scoreless innings on five hits and Bryce Brentz drove in three runs, leading the Sea Dogs to a 7-0 win over Reading…MacDonald, the first Mainer to play for the Sea Dogs, did not issue a walk, fanned five, and allowed only one runner to reach third base…Portland scored three runs in the first inning off losing pitcher Julio Rodriguez (5-4)…Jackie Bradley Jr. jump started Portland’s offense with a solo-homer to right-center field – his first in Double-A…Marquez Smith went 2-for-4 with a first-inning RBI double…Jeremy Hazelbaker had three hits (two doubles & single) and reached base five times…Ryan Dent and Peter Hissey added RBI’s in the win.

The first Mainer in franchise history is Mike MacDonald, who makes his second start of the season for Portland.

The Sea Dogs continue their 8-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Reading Phillies…After winning the first 4 games of the stand against New Hampshire, the ‘Dogs have dropped the last two, losing 11-4 last night…Camden, Maine native Mike MacDonald, who became the first Mainer to play for the Sea Dogs on July 8th at Trenton, makes his second Double-A start…MacDonald hurt his left hamstring five batters into his first appearance with Portland and was activated from the disabled list earlier today…The righty made two starts at Hadlock Field as a member of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2006.

Sea Dogs look for a new streak

SECOND HALF STRETCH: The Sea Dogs continue an eight game, seven-day stretch with the first of a three game series against the Reading Phillies tonight at 7:00 PM… Reading leads the season series 7-3 and took two of three from the ‘Dogs at Hadlock Field on April 27-29…With the Phillies in town, it marks the first time in 25 games that the Sea Dogs won’t be playing the Fisher Cats or Thunder.

MLB REHAB UPDATE: RHP Chris Carpenter joins the Portland Sea Dogs as he continues his Major League rehab stint as part of the Boston Red Sox…The righty had a bone spur removed from his throwing elbow prior to the 2012 season…Carpenter marks the 24th Major Leaguer to rehab with the Sea Dogs, the 18th as a Red Sox affiliate and the sixth player to rehab with Portland this season (Crawford, Ellsbury, Matsuzaka, Kalish, and Sweeney)…Yesterday, Carl Crawford made a rehab start with the Pawtucket Red Sox and notched two hits in the game.

SMITH SPARKS SEA DOGS WIN IN OPENER, 4‐2: Marquez Smith reached base safely three times, hit a home run, and scored two runs in Portland’s 4‐2 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats…Will Latimer made his first career start in 124 appearances and delivered four innings and allowed just one run on one hit…Jeremy Hazelbaker set the tone early and crushed a two‐run homer to right center in the bottom of the first against right John StilsonBrock Huntzinger was first out of the pen…He tossed three innings and allowed just one run on a mammoth home run off the bat of Mike McDade…Josh Fields got out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save.

Back At It — ‘Cats and ‘Dogs Kick Off Second Half

ALL-STAR FESTIVITIES COMPLETE: The East All-Stars walked off over the West All-Stars 5-4 in the Eastern League All Star Game in Reading, PA…The Sea Dogs were well represented with pitcher Aaron Kurcz, and position players Bryce Brentz and Reynaldo Rodriguez earning selections to the East squad…Binghamton’s Eric Campbell hit an RBI single with two-down in the ninth and plated Reading’s Troy Hanzawa to send the East to the 5-4 win…Brentz went 0-for-4 with two Ks in the game and Kurcz delivered one and two-thirds innings of scoreless, hitless relief and he struck out two…Rodriguez did not play in the game. New Hampshire’s Mike McDade went 4-for-4 with two RBI in the East’s win.

Final game before the break

Mike MacDonald left yesterday’s game with a leg injury, lasting only 2/3 of a inning, but he did become the first Mainer to play for the Sea Dogs.

THIS IS IT…: The Sea Dogs wrap up their six-game road trip tonight with the finale of a three game series against the Trenton Thunder…The trip is the final one before the Eastern League All Star Game…Aaron Kurcz (replaces teammate Chris Hernandez), Bryce Brentz, and Reynaldo Rodriguez will make the trip to Reading to participate in the All-Star Game.

HOWEVER BRIEF, HISTORY WAS MADE: Camden, Maine native Mike MacDonald made his first start in the Red Sox system yesterday in Trenton…MacDonald was the first Maine native to play for the Sea Dogs…The right-hander pitched just two-thirds of the first inning in yesterday’s ball game before leaving with an injury…Additionally, MacDonald was the third University of Maine Black Bear to play for the Sea Dogs in franchise history, joining Pete Fisher (2005) and Rusty Tucker (2006).

The first for the Sea Dogs, a Maine native joins the ‘Dogs in Trenton

TWO MORE GAMES: The Sea Dogs continue their six-game road trip tonight with the second of a three game series against the Trenton Thunder…The trip is the final one before the Eastern League All Star Game…Aaron Kurcz (replaces teammate Chris Hernandez), Bryce Brentz, and Reynaldo Rodriguez will make the trip to Reading to participate in the All-Star Game.

THE FIRST FOR A MAINER: Camden, Maine native Mike MacDonald makes his first start in the Red Sox system this afternoon in Trenton…MacDonald will be the first Maine native to play for the Sea Dogs…The right-hander was pitching with the Somerset Patriots (Atlantic League) before his contract was purchased by the Boston Red Sox and assigned to Portland…Additionally, MacDonald will be the third University of Maine Black Bear to play for the Sea Dogs in franchise history, joining Pete Fisher (2005) and Rusty Tucker (2006).
