Before tonight’s game, I had a chance to interview former Sea Dog Tommy Hottovy, who now pitches for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Hottovy spent parts of six years with the Portland Sea Dogs from 2006-11, and he became a good friend. I think it was his passion for fantasy football that kicked off the friendship. The former Wichita State product was a conventional pitcher until the spring of 2011, when he decided it was time for a chance. The previous season, he had been working on it with Sea Dogs Pitching Coach Bob Kipper. When I arrived to Spring Training in 2011, I couldn’t believe to see Tommy throwing from down under. His transformation was amazing, and it seemed like he’d be doing it for years. They call it submarine style, down under, side arm and tons of other slang words. But it just worked for Hottovy and it landed him in the big leagues with the Red Sox in 2011. And the biggest thrill for Hottovy, pitching for the Kansas City Royals, the team he grew up rooting for.
