Back at it for ‘Dogs, open up long road trip
The Sea Dogs resume action tonight in Binghamton, opening a 9-game roadtrip in seven days at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, NY…In the opener, the ‘Dogs and B-Mets resume a suspended game from June 25th at Hadlock Field.
Notes for today
BACK TO BUSINESS: After a two-day break for the Eastern League All-Star game, the Sea Dogs return to action on Thursday night, opening up a nine-game roadtrip in seven days against the Binghamton Mets…Tonight’s first game is the continuation of June 26th’s suspended game at Hadlock Field…Portland will be the home team when the game resumes in the top of third inning with no score…Binghamton holds the best record in the Eastern League, the Sea Dogs are the second playoff team in the Eastern Division.
THAT WAS QUICK: On Monday afternoon, the Sea Dogs fell to the New Britain Rock Cats 2-1 in a contest that lasted a season-low, 2 hours and 5 minutes…Newly assigned Terry Doyle suffered the tough luck loss, allowing just two runs on seven hits over 8 IP…Portland’s lone run came in the ninth inning on Garin Cecchini’s run-scoring, but Virgil Vasquez (1-2) completed the 9-inning complete game, retiring Tony Thomas and Michael Almanzar with runners at the corners and one out, to end the game…New Britain scored their runs on solo-homers by Daniel Ortiz and Jordan Parraz.
GETS A LITTLE CONFUSING: Cecchini has reached base safely in all 16 games in Double-A, but that could change with tonight’s suspended game (currently 0-for-1)…Cecchini is leading all Red Sox Minor Leaguers with a .364 average and has a hit in 13 of 16 Double-A starts…His average with Portland is .414 (24-for-58)
RECAPPING THE ALL-STAR GAME: The Western stars defeated the East 5-0 in last night’s Eastern League All-Star game at New Britain Stadium…RHP Anthony Ranaudo took the loss for the East, giving up three runs on three walks and a three-run homer to Richmond’s Javier Herrera…3B Michael Almanzar went 1-for-2…Christian Vazquez went 0-for-2 and Matt Spring went 0-for-1.
STARTS IN THIRD: RHP Chris Balcom-Miller will take the mound in the suspended game in relief of Keith Couch (2 IP, 0 H 2 BB)…RHP Cory Mazzoni gets the call in the bottom of the third for Binghamton…The suspended game will complete the season series between the two teams at Hadlock Field.
FIRST WAS DEBUT: RHP Mike McCarthy made his Double-A debut on June 15th vs. the Akron Aeros, his only start with Portland…McCarthy has not faced Binghamton this season.
WHAT’S ON DECK: The Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets resume their six-game series on Friday night beginning at 7:05 PM from NYSEG Stadium…The Sea Dogs are 10-10 during a 38-game stretch against the Eastern Division…On Monday, Portland’s second half of the trip swings to Manchester, New Hampshire.
