Double-dip on Monday in New Britain

The Sea Dogs open up a four-game series in three days on Monday night against the New Britain Rock Cats from New Britain Stadium. Portland and New Britain are tied for 4th place in the Eastern Division, just 3.5 games behind New Hampshire for the second playoff spot.

Notes for Monday

AWAY FOR A BIT: The Sea Dogs and New Britain Rock Cats open up a four-game series in three days with a doubleheader on Monday night at New Britain Stadium…Portland has won two straight and is tied for 4th place in the Eastern Division with the ‘Cats…The Sea Dogs are 1-2-2 in doubleheaders and have one more left on the schedule – August 31st vs. Trenton at Hadlock Field.

GOOD FIGHT, ‘DOGS WIN: RHP Mike McCarthy (1-3) earned his first Double-A win and LF Ryan Dent hit a key three-run homer, leading the Sea Dogs to a 7-5 win over the Reading Fightin Phils on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field…Portland trailed 3-1 before Dent’s three-run homer over the Maine Monster in the fourth…The ‘Dogs scored five of seven runs with two outs, receiving back-to-back RBI singles from Garin Cecchini and Michael Almanzar in the fifth…McCarthy allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings pitched…Bobby Lanigan retired all four batters to earn a hold and Eric Niesen pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn his first save with Portland.

TURNING THIS AROUND, BIG TIME: Almanzar was 4-for-40 from July 4-15, but has a multi-hit game in four of his last five starts, going 9-for-18 (.500), HR, 4 RBI and a double…Yesterday, Almanzar blasted his 12th homer of the season, but his first since June 5th at Erie…The home run was also his first at Hadlock Field since June 1st against the Altoona Curve.

HOW IRONIC: RHP Keith Couch replaced RHP Brandon Workman (pitching tonight for Boston) in the rotation and has gone 3-1, 2.86 ERA (14 ER/44.0 IP) in 8 starts…Couch suffered that loss in his previous outing against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on July 17th…RHP Jeremy Kehrt makes the start in game two of the doubleheader, and will have all four of his starts this year in game two of doubleheaders.

BERMUDEZ TRIANGLE: OF Ronald Bermudez was assigned back to Portland today from Triple-A Pawtucket, beginning his third stint with the ‘Dogs…Bermudez hit .265 (31-for-117) in 34 games with the PawSox.

INK IN THE ‘PEN: RHP Miguel Celestino worked a perfect eighth in Friday’s game, recording a strikeout…Celestino is scoreless in four of his last six outings.

WHAT’S ON DECK: The Sea Dogs and New Britain Rock Cats (Twins affiliate) play game three of their four-game series on Tuesday night…The ‘Dogs are 13-20 during a 37-game stretch against the Eastern Division…Portland returns home on Thursday night to host the Harrisburg Senators (Nationals affiliate).
