CLEAN SWEEP: Portland swept last night’s doubleheader, taking the opener 5-4 and the nightcap 8-3 in 9-innings…Tony Thomas blasted a three-run homer and made a great diving catch to save a run in the fourth…Keith Couch worked six innings to earn his seventh win of the season…In game two, Matt Spring hit two go-ahead homers, including the game-winner in the ninth…Jeremy Kehrt made the start in game two and worked five hitless innings until New Britain scored three times in the sixth inning on homers by Angel Morales and Miguel Sano.
MAKING A DENT THIS MONTH: INF/OF Ryan Dent hit his third homer of the season in game two last night, going back-to-back with Spring…Dent has all three homers this month and has hit safely in three of his last four starts…Last night was the second time Portland has gone back-to-back this season (Derrik Gibson and Shannon Wilkerson on April 7th vs. Trenton).
HIS TURN: Couch improve to 4-1, 3.24 ERA (18 ER/50.0 IP) in 9 starts since taking the spot of RHP Brandon Workman in the rotation…The right-hander is the probable starter for Future’s at Fenway this Saturday against Harrisburg.
HOW ABOUT THAT ‘PEN: Portland’s bullpen worked four scoreless innings last night…LHP Rafael Perez worked a scoreless inning in game one for his third save in as many opportunities…RHP Pete Ruiz returned from the disabled list and pitched two perfect innings in game two to earn his second win of the season.
WELCOME BACK: OF Ronald Bermudez re-joined Portland yesterday from Triple-A Pawtucket and went 3-for-5 in game two…Bermudez made a great diving catch in the fifth inning to keep Kehrt’s no-hitter in tact.
