‘DOGS AND ‘CATS ON FRIDAY: The Sea Dogs and New Britain Rock Cats (Twins affiliate) continue their five-game series on Friday night at Hadlock Field…Portland holds a four-game lead over the Rock Cats and Trenton Thunder for the second playoff spot in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division…This series marks the final time the two teams play in Maine…Portland travels to New Britain Stadium on July 22-24 for a four-game series in three days (July 22nd is a doubleheader).

EARLY FIREWORKS: The Sea Dogs scored four runs in the first inning, but New Britain scored the final six, beating Portland 6-4 on Independence Day at Hadlock Field…Tony Thomas gave Portland a 2-0 lead with a two-run double…After an error scored the third run, J.C. Linares added a run-scoring single…Jordan Parraz put New Britain on the board with a three-run homer off Charlie HaegerJosmil Pinto tied the game with a leadoff homer n the sixth…Miguel Sano had the game-winning RBI, nailing a pinch-hit double off losing pitcher Rafael Perez in the ninth.

NOW TIED AT THE TOP: Thomas and INF Michael Almanzar are leading the team with 53 RBI…Thomas has a multi-RBI game in four of his last six games and 15 since June 23rd…Linares has an RBI in six of his last seven starts, and is hitting .300 (3-for-10) this month.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY: The Sea Dogs and New Britain Rock Cats (Twins affiliate) open up a five-game series on Thursday night at Hadlock Field, leading up to the Eastern League All-Star break…Portland is seeking their second, 7-game winning streak this season, and has won back-to-back series for the first time since they won four straight series from April 26-May 8…The ‘Dogs hold a four-game lead over the Trenton Thunder for the second playoff spot in the Eastern Division…The Rock Cats are five games back.

B & C GIVE AN A+ PERFORMANCE: LHP Drake Britton (7-6) tossed seven scoreless frames and 3B Garin Cecchini went 3-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBI, leading the Sea Dogs to a 7-0 win over the Trenton Thunder on Wednesday night…Cecchini smacked his first Double-A homer in the third, a two-run shot off losing pitcher Zach Nuding (2-10)…Britton scattered seven hits on three walks and fanned four…Heiker Meneses and Christian Vazquez added RBI’s…Shannon Wilkerson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base…Miguel Celestino closed out the game with two scoreless innings.

SERIES NOTES: Portland swept the Thunder in a three-game series over two days, picking up their first series sweep at Hadlock Field since August 12-14, 2012 against the Altoona Curve…The ‘Dogs picked up their eight team shutout on Wednesday night and Britton’s quality start was the team’s 30th in 82 starts. 

GETS A LITTLE CONFUSING: Cecchini has reached base safely in all 11 games in Double-A, but that could change due to June 26th’s suspended game with the Binghamton Mets…Last night was Cecchini’s best game with Portland, and he continues to lead all Red Sox Minor Leaguers in average (.353).

VERY FITTING FOR MAY: Rock Cats starter Trevor May had back-to-back seven inning outings against Portland on May 4 & 10…On the 10th, May hurled a complete game in a 6-0 win in game two of a doubleheader at New Britain Stadium…Knuckleballer Charlie Haeger picked up his first win of the season at New Britain on May 10th.

GIVE THEM A HIGH FIVE: The Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate) conclude their three-game series in two days on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field…Portland has won five straight, their longest win streak since a season-high, seven-game winning streak from April 27-May 4…The Sea Dogs hold a three-game lead over the Trenton Thunder for the second playoff spot in the Eastern Division…Portland has won back-to-back series for the first time since April 30-May 5 (Reading and New Britain).

TWO FOR ONE: Portland swept a doubleheader from the Thunder on Tuesday night, winning the opener 4-1 and taking the nightcap 7-6 in 8 innings…Travis Shaw ended the twinbill, with a walk-off homer to leadoff the eighth against Fred Lewis…Shaw homered twice and scored three runs…In the opener, Keith Couch (6-2) fired his third career complete-game, allowing five hits, one run and striking out a season-high eight batters…Portland scored all four runs with two outs…Tony Thomas blasted a two-run homer in the first, his 10th of the season.

TURNING A CORNER: Shaw picked up his first Double-A multi-homer game on Tuesday and the second of his career…The Ohio native has hit safely in 14 of  his last 17 games: 21-for-61 (.344), 6 HR, 17 RBI and 4 doubles…Shaw has 4 homers in his last six games and leads the team with 53 walks…Thomas homered in three straight games and has 9 RBI in his last four starts.

THAT MAKES SIX: Portland picked up their sixth walk-off win of the season and improved to 22-20 at Hadlock Field…Shaw’s walk-off homer was the second this season…C Matt Spring hit a walk-off grand slam against Binghamton’s Jeff Walters on May 18th…Portland improved to 4-6 in extra-innings and swept their first doubleheader since July 13, 2012 against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

SUNDAY FUNDAY: For the second straight Sunday on the road, the Sea Dogs scored 10+ runs, defeating the Fisher Cats 13-5 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium…Travis Shaw knocked in a career-high 5 runs, blasting a grand slam in the in the fourth…Tony Thomas homered for the second straight day and finished with 4 RBI…Despite allowing 9 hits and 5 runs, RHP Anthony Ranaudo improved to 8-2…Michael Almanzar went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and J.C. Linares had three hits an RBI…Ryan Dent had a season-high three hits and Garin Cecchini finished 2-for-5 with 3 runs scored…Mike McCarthy earned his second save (4 IP).

CECCHINI HAS ADJUSTED: Cecchini has reached base safely in all 8 Double-A starts, and has a hit in 7 of 8 games (5 multi-hit games)…The Louisiana native leads all Red Sox Minor Leaguers in average at .352 (87-for-247)…Cecchini is hitting .367 (12-for-33), 3 RBI and 7 walks with Portland.
