LAST ONE IN VIRGINIA: The Sea Dogs and Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants affiliate) wrap up their three-game series on Thursday night at the Diamond…Portland has dropped the first 2 games of the series and eight of 11 All-Time in Richmond…Portland finished July at 13-17 and suffered back-to-back sub .500 months, after starting the season 30-23…RHP Keith Couch makes his 11th start of the season for Portland in the series finale…Couch is 5-1 since taking the rotation spot of RHP Brandon Workman.

TRIPLE THE DIFFERENCE: LF Javier Herrera laced a run-scoring triple in the seventh inning, snapping a 2-2 tie and giving the Flying Squirrels a 3-2 win on Wednesday night…Richmond’s bullpen retired all 11 batters faced, receiving 2.2 IP from winning pitcher RHP Edwin Quirarte (2-5)…RHP Miguel Celestino (1-7) suffered his only loss of July, giving up one run on one hit over 1.1 IP…1B Travis Shaw knocked in both runs with a fielder’s choice in the fourth and an RBI double in the sixth…RHP Matt Barnes tossed 5.2 innings on four hits, two runs (one earned), three walks and seven strikeouts.

OH HENRY: LHP Henry Owens was assigned to Portland earlier today from High-A Salem…Owens, the #5 prospect in the Red Sox system according to Baseball American, went 8-5, 2.92 ERA (34 ER/104.2 IP) in 20 starts with the Salem Red Sox…The 21-year old leads the Carolina League and Red Sox system with 123 strikeouts and had a stretch of 19.1 innings without allowing a hit (July 11-28)…On July 17th, Owens tossed the first 6 innings in a combined no-hitter against the Frederick Keys.

NICE MONTH MATT: Despite a 1-3 record in July, Barnes compiled a 1.74 ERA (4 ER/20.2 IP) in five starts…The righty has 30 strikeouts in his last 20.2 IP and has allowed one earned run or less in six of his last seven starts.

WHO WERE THE LEADERS: The Sea Dogs hit .230 in July, but had a 3.76 ERA (107 ER/256.0 IP)…INF Derrik Gibson led the team in hitting at .313, C Christian Vazquez was second at .309…Couch earned three of Portland’s 13 wins in July.

THREE QUARTERS TO A GRAND: With a win tonight, the Sea Dogs will have 750 as a Red Sox affiliate…Saturday’s win at the 8th Annual Future’s at Fenway was their third in four games at Fenway Park.

WHAT’S ON DECK: Portland opens up a three-game series on Friday night against the Bowie Baysox (Orioles affiliate) at Prince George’s Stadium…The Sea Dogs are 2-4 during a 22-game stretch against the Western Division (8-32 overall)…Portland finishes the season with 16 straight games against New Hampshire and Trenton.
