THE DEBUT OF THE BIG O: The Sea Dogs are 1-3 during their six-game trip, which continues tonight against the Bowie Baysox at Prince George’s Stadium…Portland snapped a three-game losing streak last night and trails the Trenton Thunder by two games for the second playoff spot in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division…LHP Henry Owens makes his Double-A debut in tonight’s game…Owens ranks the #5 prospect in the Red Sox system according to Baseball America.
WAY TO BREAK THROUGH: Portland scored seven times in the 11th inning to take the series opener 9-2 on Friday night…1B Travis Shaw led off the inning with a solo-homer to right field, his 14th of the season…CF Shannon Wilkerson (4-for-5) put the game away with a two-run double off losing pitcher LHP Chris Petrini (3-5)…Later in the inning, LF Tony Thomas had a two-run single and 3B Michael Almanzar hit a two-run homer to right field…LHP Rafael Perez (2-1) earned his second win of the season, working 2.1 innings on one hit and three strikeouts.
WHAT A TRIP: Wilkerson is 8-for-12 (.667) on the roadtrip with 2 RBI and 2 doubles…Shaw and Thomas have hit safely in all four games this trip.
OH HENRY: Owens went 8-5, 2.92 ERA (34 ER/104.2 IP) in 20 starts with the Salem Red Sox…The 21-year old leads the Carolina League and Red Sox system with 123 strikeouts and had a stretch of 19.1 innings without allowing a hit (July 11-28)…On July 17th, Owens tossed the first 6 innings in a combined no-hitter against the Frederick Keys (Baltimore affiliate).
THAT’S NOT ALL: RHP Anthony Ranaudo was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket yesterday and was replaced by LHP Chris Hernandez (assigned from Pawtucket) on the roster…Ranaudo leaves Portland 8-4, 2.95 ERA (36 ER/109.2 IP) in 19 starts…Hernandez went 3-9, 5.72 ERA (65 ER/102.1 IP) in 24 games/16 starts with the Pawtucket this season…Ranaudo’s ERA is ranked third in the Eastern League.
