DOWN TO SIX: The Sea Dogs trail the Trenton Thunder by six games for the second playoff spot in the Eastern Division, and continue their three-game series in Harrisburg, PA on Saturday night at Metro Bank Park…With a win tonight, the ‘Dogs will clinch their second series win against the Western Division (took two of three at Bowie on August 2-4)…RHP Matt Barnes is 1-4, 2.29 ERA in seven starts since July 1st…He lost to Harrisburg on July 25th in the Senators 2-1 win.
HENRY WITH A BIG 0: LHP Henry Owens tossed five hitless innings and fanned 10, leading the Sea Dogs to a 4-1 win in the series opener on Friday night…Owens walked all three batters in the first inning and allowed an unearned run on a wild pitch…The lefty retired the final 12 batters faced and induced 22 swings and misses…1B Michael Almanzar tied the game at one with a single during Portland’s 2-run fourth…RHP Jeremy Kehrt tossed three scoreless frames for his third hold of the season…LHP Rafael Perez fanned RF Destin Hood to the game and secure his fourth save of the season.
THAT MAKES THREE: Owens has three hitless appearances this season (two with Salem) and Portland improved to 3-0 in starts made by the left…In 15 innings in Double-A, Owens has fanned 29 batters, a 17.4 SO/per nine-innings pitched.
WHO SAYS 13 IS UNLUCKY? Catcher Christian Vazquez extended his team-high hitting streak to 12 games by going 2-for-3 last night…Vazquez’s .426 this month is the second highest in Double-A behind New Hampshire’s Gabe Jacobo (.427)…INF Garin Cecchini has reached base safely in a team-high 25 straight games.
TURNING A CORNER: Almanzar has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 starts: 14-for-48 (.292), HR, 7 RBI, 2 2B…The first-year Sea Dog is the team leader in multi-hit (32) and multi-RBI (18) games…Ryan Dent is 7-for-15 (.467) during the trip.
