Sunday Fun Day at Hadlock Field

The Sea Dogs and Bowie Baysox (Orioles affiliate) conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field…Red Sox Catcher David Ross continues his 2-game MLB Rehab Assignment with Portland.

Ross was placed on the disabled list on June 18th after suffering a concussion.  He has appeared in 23 games for the Red Sox this season hitting .185 (12-for-65) with four home runs and six RBI.  Ross is an 11 year Major League veteran having spent time with the Dodgers, Pirates, Padres, Reds, Braves, and Red Sox.  He signed with the Red Sox as a free agent on November 14, 2012.

HOME DEBUT FOR BIG O: LHP Henry Owens (1-0, 0.00) makes his Hadlock Field debut in the series opener with the Bowie Baysox (Orioles affiliate) on Friday night…Owens fanned 11 in his Double-A debut against Bowie on August 3rd at Prince George’s Stadium…Portland was swept in a three-game series by Richmond to start the homestand, and dropped all six games to the Flying Squirrels this season…Bowie has won three of their last four, including two of three in New Hampshire to start their six-game roadtrip.

NO PANIK FROM RICHMOND: SS Joe Panik knocked in all four runs with a single and a three-run homer, lifting Richmond past the Sea Dogs 4-1 on Thursday afternoon…RHP Craig Westcott (5-11) tossed seven innings on five hits and one unearned run to beat Portland…RHP Terry Doyle (1-4) suffered the loss, despite seven strong innings on eight hits, four runs (three earned) on one walk and four strikeouts…2B Ryan Dent knocked in Portland’s lone run with a ground out in the seventh…RHP Edwin Quirarte recorded the final four outs to earn his eighth save of the year.

BIG O FOR OWENS: Lefty Henry Owens fanned a career-high 11 batters in his Double-A debut, leading the Sea Dogs to a 6-1 win over Bowie on Saturday…Owens tossed six innings on four hits, two walks and 11 K’s, holding Bowie 0-for-9 with runners-in-scoring position…J.C. Linares, Heiker Meneses and Travis Shaw each had 2 RBI…Shaw homered for the second straight night and has the game-winning RBI in both games…RHP Bobby Lanigan worked the final three innings on three hits, one run and three strikeouts for the save…Bowie finished 0-for-15 with runners-in-scoring position.

THAT WAS SECOND: Owens’ 11-strikeout performance was the second best by a Sea Dog this season…RHP Anthony Ranaudo, who makes his Triple-A debut tonight in Buffalo, fanned 13 on June 13th vs. Erie at Hadlock Field.

HITTIN IS CATCHING ON: Catcher Christian Vazquez went 3-for-5 last night with a double and two runs scored…Vazquez is leading the league in throwing out runners at 49%, but is hitting .333 (26-for-78) with a homer and 7 RBI since July 1st.

WAY TO BREAK THROUGH: Portland scored seven times in the 11th inning to take the series opener 9-2 on Friday night…1B Travis Shaw led off the inning with a solo-homer to right field, his 14th of the season…CF Shannon Wilkerson (4-for-5) put the game away with a two-run double off losing pitcher LHP Chris Petrini (3-5)…Later in the inning, LF Tony Thomas had a two-run single and 3B Michael Almanzar hit a two-run homer to right field…LHP Rafael Perez (2-1) earned his second win of the season, working 2.1 innings on one hit and three strikeouts.

052612_7D_3825-MThe Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox have announced that right-handerAnthony Ranaudo has been promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. Ranaudo joins Opening Day starters Drake Britton and Brandon Workman to earn a promotion this season. Lefty Chris Hernandez has been assigned from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill out the 25-man roster.

Ranaudo leaves the Sea Dogs with the third best ERA in the Eastern League at 2.90 (36 ER/109.2 IP), going 8-5 in 19 starts. The righty went 9-7, 3.91 ERA (64 ER/147.1 IP) in 28 career starts in Double-A.

The former standout at LSU is ranked the #6 pitching prospect in the Red Sox system and the 14th overall according to Baseball America. Ranaudo went 6-1, 1.48 ERA (9 ER/54.2 IP) in his first 10 starts of the season
