THEY MADE IT INTERESTING: Portland held off a ninth-inning rally by New Britain to take the first of 19 meetings between the two rivals, 6-4 on Thursday night…LF Carlos Rivero finished 3-for-4, with is 2-run single in the fifth inning, proving to be the game-winning hit…Couch worked 5.2 quality innings, yielding one unearned run on five hits, one walk and five strikeouts…RHP Jose Valdez retired Daniel Ortiz, the go-ahead run, to notch his second save of the year…Betts went 2-for-4 with two runs scored…Matt Spring and Sean Coyle each had an RBI.
BOTH DON’T COUNT: Couch has worked 5.2 innings in both starts, allowing an unearned run in each game…The right-hander is 13-3, 3.13 ERA (50 ER/141.0 IP) in 31 games/17 starts in his Sea Dogs career (2013-14), but 10-1, 2.61 ERA as a starter…He became the 6th pitcher in franchise history to reach 13 victories.
RALLY OFF THE PEN: New Britain scored three times off RHP Noe Ramirez over 1.2 IP…RHP Michael Olmsted relieved Couch in the sixth inning and pitched 1.2 scoreless without allowing a hit…Rock Cats starter RHP D.J. Baxendale allowed five runs on eight hits over six innings pitched.
STAYING HOT AT THE PLATE: OF Shannon Wilkerson has a team-high six-game hitting streak, going 1-for-4 with a run scored last night…Spring has a run-scoring double in both starts…Coyle has an RBI in consecutive starts, reaching base safely in five of six starts to begin his Double-A career.
