THAT’S A SPLIT: The Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets began a six-game series on Monday night by splitting a doubleheader, tonight, they play game three of their series at Hadlock Field…The ‘Dogs are 12 games over .500 for the second time this season and have not been 13 games over .500 since they were 36-23 in 2008 – last time they were 14 games over .500 was July 19, 2006 (55-41)…LHP Brian Johnson earned the win in his Double-A debut on May 3rd at NYSEG Stadium, and makes his fourth start of the season with Portland.
UP AND DOWN: RHP Hansel Robles (2-2) fired six-shutout innings in game one, leading the Binghamton Mets to a 5-0 win over LHP Henry Owens (4-3)…1B Matt Clark went 2-for-2 with a three-run homer…In game two, the Sea Dogs clubbed out 13 hits and beat the B-Mets 8-2…C Mike Brenly hit his first career grand slam and 3B Travis Shaw added a solo-homer, his eighth of the season…RHP Mike McCarthy (3-2) fired six strong innings on four hits and one run to earn the win…1B Stefan Welch finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored…DH Mookie Betts, SS Deven Marrero, 2B Heiker Meneses and RF Henry Ramos each had 2 hits.
CENTER OF ATTENTION:Betts had his on-base streak snapped at 66 regular season games on Saturday…He has made his first 2 starts in CF in Portland’s last three games…Betts’ .378 average is the 3rd highest in Minor League Baseball…Betts has reached safely in 131 of his last 146 games (dating back to May 5, 2013)…Last night he picked up his team-leading 20th multi-hit game.
FOUR AGAIN: Owens worked four innings for the second straight outing…Last night, the lefty yielded two hits, one run, four walks but fanned eight…McCarthy earned his third quality start with his performance in game…Portland’s starters are 19-9 with a 3.55 ERA this season.
SHUTOUT STREAK OVER: Prior to the 5-0 shutout loss in game one Monday, the Sea Dogs were one of two teams in the Eastern League that had yet to be shutout, the Erie SeaWolves being the other…The last time the ‘Dogs were shutout was August 31, 2013 in game one of a doubleheader against Trenton where they lost 8-0.
ALMOST A CG: RHP Mike Augliera’s 8-inning stint on Sunday was the longest for a Sea Dog since RHP Keith Couch hurled a 9-inning complete game on August 8, 2013 at Harrisburg…RHP Terry Doyle last worked eight innings at Hadlock Field on July 8, 2013.
