3 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: Portland snapped a 2-2 tie with a three-run eighth inning, and held on to beat the Erie SeaWolves 5-3 on Thursday night at Hadlock Field…1B Stefan Welch delivered the game-winning hit with a two-run triple off losing pitcher RHP Slade Smith (0-2)…Welch picked up 2 triples and is tied with OF Peter Hissey for the team lead with three…RHP Mike McCarthy (5-2) tossed four scoreless frames in relief of LHP Felix Doubront to earn the win…RHP Miguel Celestino yielded a run in the ninth, but earned his fourths save of the year.
MLB REHAB UPDATE: Doubront became the 33rd player to make a Major League rehab assignment with the Portland Sea Dogs and the 27th as a Red Sox affiliate…The lefty worked four innings on three hits, two runs, no walks and two strikeouts.
