Rodriguez gets the start against Richmond

The Sea Dogs continue their six-game roadtrip on Friday night against the Richmond Flying Squirrels from the Diamond, in the state capital of Richmond.  Portland took two of three from the Bowie Baysox, suffering a 6-3 loss last night. The Sea Dogs magic number is 8 to clinch a playoff spot.  Currently, the ‘Dogs hold a 3-game lead over Binghamton Mets for the top spot in the Eastern Division.

Richmond is leading the Western Division by 2.5 games over the Akron RubberDucks, but the Flying Squirrels have lost eight straight games.  Portland has lost eight straight to Richmond, dating back to 2012.

LHP Eduardo Rodriguez makes his second start in the Red Sox system and the 18th of the season…Rodriguez is 0-3, 6.59 ERA in 3 career starts against Richmond…LHP Joe Bradley makes a spot-start for Richmond, taking the place of All-Star Jack Snodgrass (9-5, 3.48).

INF Sean Coyle injured his right ankle, beating out an infield hit on Thursday night and won’t play tonight, and probably won’t for the rest of the series.

CRAZY EIGHTS: The Sea Dogs have lost eight straight to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants affiliate), and open up a three-game weekend series at the Diamond on Friday night…Richmond has lost a franchise record eight straight games, but holds a 2.5 game lead over Akron for the top spot in the Western Division…Portland began the six-game trip by taking two of three from Bowie, and has a road-series record of 9-4-5…LHP Eduardo Rodriguez makes his second start of the season for Portland.

ONE INNING DID THE TRICK: Bowie scored all six runs in the seventh inning, and beat the Sea Dogs, 6-3, on Thursday night in the season-series finale…Buck Britton gave Bowie their first lead with a two-run double off losing pitcher Pete Ruiz (2-1)…Sharlon Schoop added a run-scoring single and Chris Marrero knocked homed the final two runs with a single to left…Ruiz did not record an out, giving up five runs on four hits…Matt Bischoff (3-5) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief…Ryan Dent blasted a two-out solo-homer in the ninth off Steven Hensley.

RANKING THE ‘DOGS: The Top 5 winning percentages (Full-Season Clubs) in Minor League Baseball: Low-A Asheville 75-41 (.647), Low-A Savannah 73-40 (.646), Low-A Greensboro and Low-A Hagerstown 73-44 (.624), Portland 74-45 (.622)…The Red Sox have the 5th best record as an organization in MiLB at 330-288 (.534).

QUALITY AGAIN: RHP Justin Haley tossed six scoreless frames last night, yielding five hits, five walks, but fanned four…Haley has a quality start in both Double-A appearances…The righty stranded eight runners and held Bowie 0-for-7 with runners-in-scoring position…Haley threw 58 of 100 pitches for strikes.

 MORE BETWEEN THE DIVISION LEADERS: Portland’s last win against Richmond was June 15, 2012 at the Diamond – and the ‘Dogs have never won a series in Richmond and 0-3-1 in season series…Portland has lost seven of eight series to the Flying Squirrels – their lone series win on June 8-10, 2012 at Hadlock Field, taking two of three…Current Sea Dog Aaron Kurcz and Chris Hernandez (with Triple-A Pawtucket) notched the wins.

HELLO RUSS: Richmond Manager Russ Morman was Portland’s Hitting Coach from 2004-07…Morman was the hitting coach with the Flying Squirrels in 2010-11 and spent the past two seasons as Triple-A Fresno’s hitting coach.
