Yesterday morning, the Sea Dogs and Rock Cats were postponed., tonight, the two teams play game two of what’s now a three-game set. Friday’s game will be made up in May, when Portland returns to New Britain Stadium.

Pre-Game Interview: Brock Huntzinger Part 2…Huntzinger earned his second save of the season on Wednesday night.
Portland Lineup: Wilkerson 8, Bogaerts 6, Shaw 3, Thomas 7, Almanzar DH, Vitek 5, Vazquez 2, Gibson 4, Hissey 9, Kaminska RHP
New Britain Lineup: Richardson 8, Santana 6, Hanson 5, Pinto DH, Ortiz 7, Bigley 9, Smith 3, Beresford 4, Rohlfing 2, Meyer RHP
–Somebody trade me…Tonight’s starters were both acquired via trade. Kaminska was received from the Pirates in exchange for Zach Stewart…Meyer was involved in the Denard Span trade with the Washington Nationals…Also, Meyer was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 2008 draft, but did not sign.
–What to do when you get an unexpected day off on the road…I saw the movie 42 yesterday with the Sea Dogs’ training staff. For a 1 o’clock movie, there were a lot of people there. I loved it. I thought the movie was just as much about Branch Rickey, (played brilliantly by Harrison Ford) as it was Jackie Robinson.
–Family affair…In case you didn’t know, Michael Almanzar’s dad pitched for the Sea Dogs in 2007, marking the first father & son tandem in franchise history.
–New Britain is in their 31st season of Eastern League Baseball…The previous affiliate of the Twins was the Boston Red Sox. David Ortiz played with New Britain as a Twins affiliate.
Report from the Fort – Congrats to Josh Fields
Today is my last day in Ft. Myers, and just the way the schedule works, I’ll be able to watch the Sea Dogs at 1 PM and the Red Sox at 7:05. I’m hoping to have video footage of John Farrell announcing the final roster.
Thanks to Robert Ford, the voice of the Houston Astros for passing this information to me earlier. Former Sea Dog Josh Fields has made the Astros. Fields was not protected by the Red Sox last season and claimed by Houston in the MLB Phase of the Rule 5 draft. If Fields did not make the Opening Day roster, he would have returned to Boston. Also, Houston could have kept him longer if he was placed on the disabled list – something similar to what Boston did with OF Adam Stern a few years ago.

Josh Fields in the Future’s at Fenway Game…Little did he know back then – his future would be in Houston. (Jillian Souza Photography)
With final roster cuts expected to be announced later today - Jackie Bradley Jr. and Ryan Pressly could join Fields in the Major Leagues…All three played in Portland last season.
I’ll have updates throughout the afternoon as the Sea Dogs battle the Rock Cats in exhibition action…Anthony Ranaudo is expected to start for Portland.
- Tickets are available for Opening Day (April 4) vs. Trenton on seadogs.com
- Former Sea Dog Stolmy Pimentel had a great camp with the Pirates and will start the season in Double-A Altoona.
- Patriots DE Rob Ninkovich will make a guest appearance at Hadlock Field on May 8th.
- Former Sox lefty Erik Bedard has won a rotation spot with the Houston Astros…Bedard was traded to Boston in a 3-team trade that involved former Sea Dogs Chih-Hsien Chiang, Tim Federowicz and Stephen Fife…Former Harrisburg Senator Brad Peacock is also in the Astros’ rotation – he was recently traded for former Sea Dog Jed Lowrie.
I’ll have more later!

Report from the Fort (Day 3 – Afternoon Edition)
The Sea Dogs made the 10-minute trip to Lee County in Ft. Myers to play the New Britain Rock Cats on Wednesday afternoon. The style of exhibition games in the minors are far different than the regular season, as today’s contest finished in a 1-1 tie. Portland scored the tying-run in the seventh inning on an RBI ground out by Matty Johnson.
Terry Doyle, who was optioned to Pawtucket earlier this morning, made the start for the Sea Dogs. Doyle was just getting work in the Double-A game, he’ll be part of Pawtucket’s staff. His line was: 4 IP, 3 H, R, ER, BB, 3 SO.
Keith Couch worked five scoreless innings of relief on two hits and two strikeouts. Couch could be part of Portland’s rotation.

Josh Reddick and Jayson Hernandez Interview
During the off-season, I host a weekly show called the Saturday Morning Jab from 8-12 PM on 96.3 FM in Portland, Maine and online at thebigjab.com.
This past weekend, former Sea Dog Josh Reddick and Red Sox Minor League Catcher Jayson Hernandez joined me on the show…Hernandez started his own charity to help those less fortunate in his home state of New Jersey, a wonderful story about one person making a difference.
My thanks to those who serve and protect us over this Veteran’s Day Weekend…MLB with a great piece, honoring players of the past.
