Game 18: Sea Dogs (4-13) at Binghamton Mets (8-7)…Humber former B-Met

The Sea Dogs have dropped three straight, 6 of 7, and finish their four-game series in Binghamton on Sunday afternoon…Pretty crazy to be in the same town where Phil Humber pitched in 2005-06.  At dinner last night, nobody in the restaurant knew who he was – that would never happen in Portland.  They know all their former Sea Dogs.  If things don’t get harder for the Red Sox, they face Humber on Thursday.  I still can’t believe the Sox game, but it’s still a long season.  For those who say yesterday was a season-killing loss, you should stop watching baseball.  Sorry to be so harsh, but the drama is getting a little bit too much. (Below are lineups)

  • Binghamton is where the Eastern League was formed in 1923
  • B-Mets official scorer Steve Kraly appeared in 5 games with the Yankees in 1953.
  • The creator of the Twilight Zone Rod Serling grew up in Binghamton, NY, and that influenced his work.
  • Sea Dogs and Mets met last August 20th at Fenway Park, Chris Martin took the loss in his Double-A debut.

Pitching Matchup

Sea Dogs look to salvage the final game of their 4-game set in Binghamton, NY.

  • Today RHP Brock Huntzinger (0-3, 7.50) vs. RHP Collin McHugh (2-1, 2.16)

Day 5 Morning Report/Valentine quotes

The Portland Sea Dogs and Pawtucket Red Sox travel to Tampa Bay’s minor league facility this afternoon, game time is 1:00 PM.  Portland beat New Britain on Monday, 6-5, and finish their exhibition schedule on Saturday against the Rock Cats. Sunday is a Camp Day for the minor leagues, the last day of Spring Training.

Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine spoke to the media around 10:30, with the main topic, today’s roster moves:  First baseman Lars Anderson and shortstop Jose Iglesias optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.  The club reassigned right-handed pitchers Justin Germano and Doug Mathis and outfielder Josh Kroeger to minor league camp.

Great quote from Valentine on Iglesias  “I don’t stop believing in a player until I see him stop believing in himself. I saw that the other day, I thought.” Jose spoke to a few media members outside the Red Sox weight room, and I wished him the best of luck.  I’m sure we’ll see him in Boston soon.

Bobby Valentine is eight days away from making his "official" managerial debut with the Red Sox.

Additional Bobby V quotes

On Tampa Bay not using any of their main starters against Boston – “Wise to hold starters back in the division.:

On Daniel Bard pitching twice against Blue Jays – “Different situation since he’s trying to make the team.”

Carl Crawford’s status – “He’s been taking swings in the cage, he’s feeling good.  Probably stay in Ft .Myers to work with the medical team.”

_____________________________________________________________

I’m getting ready to watch Red Sox batting practice on the field, and hopefully will have an interview with Ryan Kalish.

It was very nice to catch up with former Sea Dog Trainer Brad Pearson.  Brad is a very good friend of mine, and he’s one of two assistant trainers with Boston.

Yes, I got to interview Bobby Valentine

Greetings Sea Dogs’ fans!  I can’t believe that pitchers and catchers will report to spring training in less than three weeks.   This season will be my 16th in professional baseball, and I feel like the off-season goes by quicker every season.  I can’t go any further in this blog without thanking everyone who supported my blog in 2011.  Thanks to all you, my blog ranked in the top 100, and that credit goes to all of you.  I appreciate it so much.

So it’s Monday morning after the Patriots win, and I’m still on a high after that victory.  I can’t believe how emotional I get with football.  I was literally shaking during the game on Sunday, and in the end, the Patriots didn’t break our hearts.  It’s been so much fun watching this dynasty.

Interviewing Bobby Valentine (courtesy of Portland Sea Dogs)

The official start of my season began on January 13th when I got to host the annual Sea Dogs’ Hot Stove Dinner.  Here’s the link to watch all four interviews, which includes Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
