Allen Webster has arrived in Portland

The Boston Red Sox have assigned right-handed pitcher Allen Webster to the Portland Sea Dogs.  Webster will wear uniform #21.  The Sea Dogs roster is now at the 25-man limit.

Webster was acquired by the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday in a nine player trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The trade sent former Sea Dogs Josh Beckett and Adrian Gonzalez along with Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to the Dodgers in exchange for first baseman James Loney, infielder Ivan DeJesus, Jr., right hander Allen Webster, and two players to be named later.

Webster has pitched at Double-A Chattanooga this year, posting a 6-8 record with a  3.55 ERA (48 ER/121.2 IP) and 117 strikeouts compared to 57 walks allowed in 27 appearances, including 22 starts.

The 22-year-old right-hander is tied for fourth in the Southern League in strikeouts and ranks seventh in the circuit in ERA, the second-best mark among full-season Dodgers farmhands.

He has surrendered just one home run all season and since May 15 ranks fourth among Double-A qualifiers with a 2.05 ERA (20 ER/88.0 IP) and fifth with a .215 opponent average (68-for-317).  Overall this season he has given up three earned runs or less in all but three starts and has held opponents to one earned run or less in a start 10 times.  He entered the 2012 season ranked by Baseball America as the Dodgers second-best prospect and as having that system’s best changeup, and was also tabbed by the publication as the No. 95 prospect overall in baseball.  Selected in the 18th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, Webster is 34-24 with one save and a 3.34 ERA (180 ER/485.0 IP), 456 strikeouts, 456 hits allowed and 202 walks over five minor league seasons in the Los Angeles system.

Bradley Jr. update, last time Sea Dogs were in fourth place

Here’s a great tweet from Sea Dogs’ beat writer Kevin Thomas on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s injury last night - Crisis avoided #SeaDogs manager Kevin Boles says OF Jackie Bradley Jr. Is “day to day” after hurting his ankle while running bases Monday…I saw Jackie before the game and he was in great spirits, he was able to walk around last night, so it’s not serious.

Jason Urquidez is 3-0, 0.40 ERA (ER/22.1 IP) in his last 8 relief outings…He earned his fourth win of the season last night.

With last night’s win, the ‘Dogs improved to 25-12 since the All-Star break, and moved into fourth place for only the second time this season.  The Sea Dogs were in place for a half day on April 5th, when they dropped game one of the Opening Day doubleheader in Reading.

The Sea Dogs have already clinched the season series against New Britain, and have won 5 of 7 at New Britain Stadium…Last night was the squad improved to 22-13 (.629) in one-run games…With a win tonight, the ‘Dogs will be four games under .500 for the first time since they were 3-8 on April 15th.

NOW THAT SPELLS RELIEF: Over the last 27 games, the Portland ‘pen has allowed just 25 earned runs over 110.2 innings (2.04 ERA)…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 229 of their last 277 IP (83%)…Since the break, they have a 2.88 ERA (103 ER/322.2 IP).

The Sea Dogs completed a three-game sweep of the Altoona Curve with last night’s 2-1 win at Hadlock Field…Portland has seven straight wins at home, the most as a Red Sox affiliate, and their longest win streak since April 8-23, 1997.

Last night Gerrit Cole hit 100 mph numerous times on the Hadlock Field radar gun.  Since I’ve been calling games with Portland (2005), I’ve seen Daniel Bard hit a 100 and Erie’s Bruce Rondon (last homestand)…Cole was consistently in the upper 90′s with his fastball, hitting 98 on a majority of his nine strikeouts.
The righty retired the first 14 batters until Xander Bogaerts nailed a double to right field.  Here’s what Cole had to say about Bogaerts – “It was 80 mph and I tried to get it in there for a strike, but I ran the risk of letting him get the bat head out on it. A lot of people would roll over it, but he did a good job of going the other way.”

The Sea Dogs continue their six-game homestand on Thursday night against the Altoona Curve (Pirates affiliate) from Hadlock Field…Portland has won six in a row at Hadlock, their longest winning streak in Maine since 2009…With last night’s win, the ‘Dogs took every series from the Western Division at home.

Saturday night is alright for Baseball…’Dogs in Erie, Pa.

The Sea Dogs suffered a 9-2 loss in the series opener to Erie on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park.  Tonight, 30-year old Mike MacDonald makes his seventh start of the season. MacDonald, the first ever Maine to play for the Sea Dogs, will pitch on three days rest due to Brandon Workman joining the rotation.  Workman makes his first Double-A start tomorrow afternoon in the roadtrip finale.

Travis Shaw launched his first Double-A homer on Friday night, hitting to the left of the brick in left field.

Quick hits from last night: Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-4 and has multi-hit games in both Double-A starts…The most impressive at-bat last night was a 10-pitch battle with Jared Gayhart…Bogaerts continued to foul off pitches, before nailing  double down the left-field line.  In addition, he’s played a smooth shortstop.

Part Two of the roadtrip…’Dogs in Erie

The Sea Dogs open up a three-game series on Friday night against the Erie SeaWolves (Tigers affiliate) from Jerry Uht Park in downtown Erie, Pa.  Portland swept the ‘Wolves last week at Hadlock Field.  Last night, the ‘Dogs completed their first season-series victory against the Akron Aeros since 1998.

There was a lot of buzz in the air last night at Canal Park, and most of the people in the stands probably had no idea what was going on.  19-year old Xander Bogaerts made his Double-A debut for Portland.  In his third at-bat, he launched a 2-1 pitch over the batter’s eye in right-center field.  Bogaerts finished 2-for-5 and handled every ball that was hit to him at shortstop.

“I didn’t expect to hit a home run,” Bogaerts told milb.com. “I was just looking to make contact. I got to a 2-0 count and he threw me a fastball that I pulled down the third-base line pretty hard. The next pitch he shook his head ‘no’ and I knew I was going to get a fastball.

More roster moves…Brandon Workman has arrived in Akron

Knuckleballer Steven Wright earned his 10th win of the season on Sunday – his debut in the Red Sox system.  Earlier today, Wright was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket.  Righty Brandon Workman has joined Portland from High-A Salem and makes his Double-A debut Sunday in Erie.

Additional moves: C Jayson Hernandez assigned to High-A Salem…Righty Andrew Bailey will continue his 30-day MLB Rehab Assignment in Pawtucket. Workman pitched last night for Salem, fanning nine over six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, but suffered the loss. The righty went 7-7, 3.40 ERA (43 ER/113.2 IP) in 20 starts with the Salem Sox.   Lineups for Wednesday

Ohio Native returns home, so does a former Aero

Jeff Shaw (Travis Shaw’s dad) pitched in the Eastern League with Canton in 1988…Travis was born the year his dad made his Major League debut.

Knuckleballer Steven Wright earned his 10th win of the season in his previous start, but that was his first with the Sea Dogs…Wright worked six innings on Sunday, allowing five hits and one run.  This couldn’t have worked out better for Wright, who was traded on July 31st from Akron and is now back in his former park.  On Monday, Wright was able to get his personal belongings and settle up some loss ends that he had in Akron.

Sticking with Ohio, 1B Travis Shaw attended Kent State, 20 minutes from Canal Park, and will have a lot of family at the game tonight, including his dad Jeff Shaw.  Travis has played at Canal Park when he was in college, he’s really looking forward to these three days.  The Shaw’s are from Washington Court House, Ohio – three hours from Akron.

With a win tonight, Portland ties a season-high for consecutive wins with with five…the ‘Dogs are 5-1 during a 15-game stretch against the Western Division – their final 15 games against the West this season.
