DAY BASEBALL AT HADLOCK: The Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets continue their three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field…Binghamton has won five straight and trails the Sea Dogs by one game for the top spot in the Eastern Division…Portland has the second best record in the Eastern League, but has dropped five of their last seven games…Right-hander Anthony Ranaudo, who ranks second in the league in ERA (1.38), makes his eighth start of the season.

LITTLE SLOPPY: The Binghamton Mets scored three times in the ninth, aided by three Portland errors, en route to a 6-3 win in the series opener on Friday night…3B Michael Almanzar tied the game at three with a two-run homer in the sixth, but committed two errors in the ninth…SS Xander Bogaerts made a throwing error on an infield-single, enabling the game’s final run to score…John Church (2-3) worked two scoreless frames to earn the win…Keith Couch (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) over 2.1 IP…Jeff Walters fanned three in the ninth to earn his 11th save of the season.

DYNAMIC DUO: Ranaudo is trying to become the first 6-game winner in the Eastern League…Ranaudo and Brandon Workman are a combined 10-2, 2.63 ERA (25 ER/85.2 IP) in 15 games/14 starts this season…With a 1.38 ERA, Ranaudo leads all Red Sox qualifying minor league pitchers…Salem’s Mike Augliera is second with a 3.12 ERA.

TOP OF THE BOARD: Almanzar blasted a two-run homer for the second consecutive game and leads the Sea Dogs in hitting at .302 (2nd overall in the Red Sox system) and homers (7)…Tony Thomas nailed his league-leading 14th double of the season last night, picking up his team-leading 27th RBI…Thomas leads the league with 22 extra-base hits and is tied for the top spot in triples with five.

NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT: RHP Matt Barnes picked up his fourth quality start of the season (tied with Workman), working six innings on five hits, three runs, one walk and seven strikeouts…Barnes is 2-0, 1.96 ERA (5 ER/23.0 IP) in four starts this month.

TURING IT AROUND: Travis Shaw went 2-for-4 last night, with a bunt-single before Almanzar’s homer in the sixth…Shaw is 6-for-9 in his last two games with a homer, 4 RBI and two doubles.

WHAT’S ON DECK: The Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets conclude their 3-game series tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 PM…Portland will host the Fisher Cats on Monday night, staring a 4-game set…Portland is 1-3 during a 17-game stretch against New Hampshire and Binghamton.

BETTER LATER THAN NEVER: The Sea Dogs are now 7-2 since the All-Star and are two games under .500 (13-15) in the last 28 games…Portland and New Hampshire continue the four game series tonight…The ‘Dogs have had success against the ‘Cats winning 12 of 19 so far this season…Portland and New Hampshire have seven games remaining, all at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester.

STOLMY STELLAR, BUTLER SAVES THE DAY IN 3-2 WIN: The Portland Sea Dogs trailed heading into the ninth, but plated two unearned runs in the ninth to take home the 3-2 win over the Fisher Cats. Kevin Howard committed two throwing errors in the ninth that led to two Portland runs scoring. Dan Butler was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and throwing error and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left by Reynaldo Rodriguez…In the bottom of the ninth Butler allowed a runner to reach on a passed ball on a strike out, but the catcher hosed Brad Glenn when he tried to steal second to end the game…Stolmy Pimentel started for the fourth straight time against New Hampshire, and once again was on point…Pimentel went seven and allowed just one run on six hits…Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a solo shot to right-center to put the Sea Dogs up 1-0 in the third.

PIMENTEL LEADING THE PITCHING CHARGE: Pimentel has worked consecutive 7-inning stints, and notches his team-leading sixth quality start of the season…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 27 of their last 29 innings pitched…Since the All-Star break, they’ve compiled a 2.42 ERA (21 ER/78.0 IP)…Tonight, Will Latimer makes his second career start – both will be against New Hampshire.

TOP OF THE ORDER HAS BEEN TOP NOTCH: Over the past four games, four players have hit in the top three places in the order and combined to go 18-for-47 (.383) with five home runs, 15 RBI, 17 runs scored, five doubles, and two triples. Smith and Hazelbaker have led the charge over the three games with 14 of the 18 hits.

MONTHLY DAP: The Red Sox awarded RHP Brock Huntzinger with Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors and Hazelbakerwith Minor League Base Runner of the Month honors for the month of June…Huntzinger went 1-0, 1.80 ERA and two saves in 9 games in June…Hazelbaker is hitting .280 (42-for-150), 10 HR, 32 RBI since June 1st.

‘Dogs home for over a week…Review the moves/Lineups and Notes

Former Sea Dog Ryan Lavarnway is hitting .412 (28-for-68) in 17 games with the PawSox this month.

The last time the Sea Dogs were home for eight straight days was the end of the 2010 season, tonight, Portland begins a nine-game, eight-day homestand against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats…Portland dropped three of four from Saturday-Monday in Trenton.

Portland has won four of six against the Fisher Cats this season, including a two-game sweep on May 7-9 at Hadlock Field – the two teams will make up that game on July 13th.

The Sea Dogs have four more series before the All-Star Break, all against New Hampshire and Trenton…Last series started 30 of 33 games for Portland against the Thunder and Fisher Cats.

  • Right-hander Jason Urquidez made his Sea Dogs debut last night, working 1.1 innings on two unearned runs.
  • Bryce Brentz provided Portland’s lone run on Monday night, clocking a solo-homer to right field on a 2-2 pitch with two outs in the nint.
  • Jackie Bradley Jr. was hitless for the first time in Double-A
  • Pawtucket suffered their eighth straight loss on Monday night, and were swept at home for the first time since 2005.

Sea Dogs and Thunder play two…Jersey Boys

The Sea Dogs ended a 21-game stretch against the Western Division going 10-11, and open up a four-game weekend series against the Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate) with a doubleheader on Saturday night…Portland plays 30 of their next 33 games against the Thunder and New Hampshire Fisher Cats…With Thursday night’s victory, Portland has won 10 of their last 14 games in Maine, and taken four straight series.

The cast of the Broadway Show “The Jersey Boys.” Maybe the Jersey boys (Ranaudo and Hernandez) in Portland will be cast in a show called the Major Leagues

In game two of tonight’s doubleheader, New Jersey native Anthony Ranaudo makes his seventh start of the season for the Sea Dogs…Ranaudo attended St. Rose High School, which is Belmar, New Jersey and located exactly 42 miles from Waterfront Park…Ranaudo and Jayson Hernandez grew up best friends, attended the same high school, and are together in Portland.  What a great story!  The odds of that happening have to be slim.

  • Jackie Bradley Jr. made his Double-A debut on Thursday night and went 1-for-4 with a single, walk and a stolen base…Bradley Jr. singled on the first pitch he saw, nailing a 92-mph fastball off Robert Gilliam into to right field.
  • Portland has dropped 8 of 10 to Trenton this season, but the two teams still have 15 games left in the season series.
  • Tonight officially starts the second half of the season…Last year, Portland was 25-46 after 71 games.

Trenton’s Cody Johnson won’t be swinging this series…He was placed on the disabled list yesterday.
