Welcome to Portland Xander Bogaerts

Earlier today, Xander Bogaerts joined the Portland Sea Dogs from High-A Salem and should be in the starting shortstop for the ‘Dogs in the series finale…To make room for Bogaerts, Infielder Zach Gentile was assigned to High-A Salem…The 19-year old is the youngest player in the Eastern League and will wear #5.  Lot of people tweeted me today about the number, saying it reminded them of Nomar.

“Being 19 in Double-A is a pretty unusual thing,” Red Sox farm director Ben Crockett told Brian McPherson of the Providence Journal prior to Pawtucket’s game at McCoy Stadium earlier today.

Bogaerts is ranked the #2 prospect in the Red Sox system according to Baseball America…In 104 games with Salem, he  hit .302 (116-for-384) with 15 homers and 64 RBI…He was signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent on August 23, 2009…Native of San Nicolaas, Aruba…Has a twin brother, Jair, also signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent and was sent to the Chicago Cubs prior to the 2012 season to complete the Theo Epstein compensation.

More roster moves…Brandon Workman has arrived in Akron

Knuckleballer Steven Wright earned his 10th win of the season on Sunday – his debut in the Red Sox system.  Earlier today, Wright was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket.  Righty Brandon Workman has joined Portland from High-A Salem and makes his Double-A debut Sunday in Erie.

Additional moves: C Jayson Hernandez assigned to High-A Salem…Righty Andrew Bailey will continue his 30-day MLB Rehab Assignment in Pawtucket. Workman pitched last night for Salem, fanning nine over six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, but suffered the loss. The righty went 7-7, 3.40 ERA (43 ER/113.2 IP) in 20 starts with the Salem Sox.   Lineups for Wednesday

Wright switches dugouts…Masterson sighting

 

There were rumors that former Sea Dog Justin Masterson might end up in Boston…This is not him at Hadlock Field, but a fan from Cleveland is here for a wedding.

 

Former Akron Aero Steven Wright was traded during Portland’s batting practice to the Boston Red Sox for former Sea Dogs Lars Anderson…Wright becomes the fifth knuckleballer in franchise history joining: RHP John Barnes (2007), RHP Charlie Haeger, LHP Joe Rogers (2004)and Charlie Zink (2003-07)…Barnes is the knuckleballer to start (August 29, 2007).

Before the game I bumped into a Indians fan in the concourse, who is visiting Hadlock Field for the first time.  I asked him if I could take a picture of his jersey – since he was wearing Justin Masterson…Masterson was rumored to be traded to Boston.

Wakefield, the recently-retired knuckleball pitcher of the Red Sox, recently talked to Wright, a phone call arranged by Rob Leary, the former Red Sox coach who is now the Indians minor league field coordinator.

 NOT IN THEIR LONG: Stolmy Pimentel (4-5) lasted a 1/3 of an inning (career-low) in Sunday’s loss to the Binghamton Mets 6-2 at NYSEG Stadium…Pimentel yielded four runs in the first on one hit, four walks and a hit batter…Mark Cohoon (6-7) worked 5.2 innings on 5 hits and 2 runs to earn the win…Juan Centeno and Dustin Martin drove in two runs for the B-Mets…Jackie Bradley Jr. clobbered his 4th homer of the season during a two-run sixth…Kolbrin Vitek added a run-scoring double with two outs…Portland’s bullpen allowed just two runs in 7.2 IP on 5 hits, 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.
