The Sea Dogs made the 10-minute trip to Lee County in Ft. Myers to play the New Britain Rock Cats on Wednesday afternoon.  The style of exhibition games in the minors are far different than the regular season, as today’s contest finished in a 1-1 tie.  Portland scored the tying-run in the seventh inning on an RBI ground out by Matty Johnson.

Terry Doyle, who was optioned to Pawtucket earlier this morning, made the start for the Sea Dogs. Doyle was just getting work in the Double-A game, he’ll be part of Pawtucket’s staff. His line was: 4 IP, 3 H, R, ER, BB, 3 SO.

Keith Couch worked five scoreless innings of relief on two hits and two strikeouts. Couch could be part of Portland’s rotation.

Part Two of the roadtrip…’Dogs in Erie

The Sea Dogs open up a three-game series on Friday night against the Erie SeaWolves (Tigers affiliate) from Jerry Uht Park in downtown Erie, Pa.  Portland swept the ‘Wolves last week at Hadlock Field.  Last night, the ‘Dogs completed their first season-series victory against the Akron Aeros since 1998.

There was a lot of buzz in the air last night at Canal Park, and most of the people in the stands probably had no idea what was going on.  19-year old Xander Bogaerts made his Double-A debut for Portland.  In his third at-bat, he launched a 2-1 pitch over the batter’s eye in right-center field.  Bogaerts finished 2-for-5 and handled every ball that was hit to him at shortstop.

“I didn’t expect to hit a home run,” Bogaerts told milb.com. “I was just looking to make contact. I got to a 2-0 count and he threw me a fastball that I pulled down the third-base line pretty hard. The next pitch he shook his head ‘no’ and I knew I was going to get a fastball.

So many New York tie-ins, I couldn’t pass it up for today’s blog…The Red Sox lost 10-3 at Yankee Stadium last night and the Sea Dogs are playing their second straight series against a New York affiliate.  Portland is 10-28 against the New York affiliates (Trenton and Binghamton) this season, and haven’t won a game at NYSEG Stadium.  Despite last night’s doubleheader sweep, the ‘Dogs are 11-6 since the All-Star break.

PITCHING HELPING THE WAY: Over the last eight games, the Portland bullpen has been outstanding and has allowed just eight runs over 34 innings (2.11 ERA)…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 82 of their last 100 innings pitched…Since the All-Star break, they’ve compiled a 3.14 ERA (51 ER/146.2 IP).

STEADY GOES SMITH: Marquez Smith has played in forty games with the Sea Dogs and has been outstanding in his time…The infielder is hitting .306 (48-for-157) with three home runs and 20 RBI…Smith has compiled a .362 on-base percentage and is slugging .465 with Portland.

FIELDS IS ON FIRE: Josh Fields has been the team’s top reliever since June 13th…He had a season-high five strikeouts on July 24th vs. Trenton…Last 12 outings: 2-0-4, 0.43 ERA (ER/21.0 IP), 5 H, 2 R, ER, 5 BB, 27 SO…Has a strikeout in 27 of 30 appearances.
