The Red Sox came up with an amazing tribute in Cleveland.

It’s been tough watching all the events going on in Boston the past few days.  Despite being so far away, I still feel very connected to the situation. I grew up in Ashland, Mass, the second town in the Marathon route.  That day is always special for it’s symbolism to Paul Revere, and the celebration to great athletes, and of course the Red Sox. This is like living through 9/11 again, and my heart goes out to so many that are suffering through all of this.

Thoughts are in Boston.

It’s been a weird day.  Baseball is so much about routine. You get up in the morning, do some work, go to the gym.  The afternoon consists of lunch, a nap and a bus to the park. Today, my ride the park was filled with so many emotions. I saw my twitter feed at 2:55 on the bus, and immediately told the guys what was going on.

I grew up in Ashland, MA, the second town on the Boston Marathon route. When I was a kid, I absolutely loved this day. Being able to see the élite runners in the world run, is something else. Also the Sox played at 11:00 AM. I was lucky to watch the entire game this morning from Binghamton, NY.  Seemed like a normal day, with the exception of seeing a great walk-off win by the Sox. Crazy how less than an hour after that hit by Napoli, a tragedy like this happens. It’s paralyzing. It hurts, makes you mad, sad and horrified all at once.  The Sea Dogs are playing in Binghamton, New York tonight, but my heart is in Boston.  Seems like too many of these things have happened in my lifetime.

Game Notes

Portland Lineup: Wilkerson 8, Bogaerts 6, Shaw 3, Thomas 7, Almanzar DH, Vitek 5, Vazquez 2, Gibson 4, Hissey 9, Kaminska RHP

New Britain Lineup: Richardson 8, Santana 6, Hanson 5, Pinto DH, Ortiz 7, Bigley 9, Smith 3, Beresford 4, Rohlfing 2, Meyer RHP

–Somebody trade me…Tonight’s starters were both acquired via trade. Kaminska was received from the Pirates in exchange for Zach Stewart…Meyer was involved in the Denard Span trade with the Washington Nationals…Also, Meyer was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 2008 draft, but did not sign.

–What to do when you get an unexpected day off on the road…I saw the movie 42 yesterday with the Sea Dogs’ training staff. For a 1 o’clock movie, there were a lot of people there. I loved it.  I thought the movie was just as much about Branch Rickey, (played brilliantly by Harrison Ford) as it was Jackie Robinson.

–Family affair…In case you didn’t know, Michael Almanzar’s dad pitched for the Sea Dogs in 2007, marking the first father & son tandem in franchise history.

–New Britain is in their 31st season of Eastern League Baseball…The previous affiliate of the Twins was the Boston Red Sox.  David Ortiz played with New Britain as a Twins affiliate.

Josh Reddick and Jayson Hernandez Interview

During the off-season, I host a weekly show called the Saturday Morning Jab from 8-12 PM on 96.3 FM in Portland, Maine and online at thebigjab.com.

This past weekend, former Sea Dog Josh Reddick and Red Sox Minor League Catcher Jayson Hernandez joined me on the show…Hernandez started his own charity to help those less fortunate in his home state of New Jersey, a wonderful story about one person making a difference.

My thanks to those who serve and protect us over this Veteran’s Day Weekend…MLB with a great piece, honoring players of the past.

Field of Dreams Sunday

Today the Sea Dogs hold their annual Field of Dreams game…At around one o’clock, the players will emerge from a cornfield in centerfield.  This is my favorite day of the year!

With yesterday’s win, the ‘Dogs are 32-17 since the All-Star Break…If they win out and New Britain takes their final two games, the Rock Cats clinch the final playoff spot in the Eastern League.

Congrats to the Pawtucket Red Sox on clinching the Wild Card in the International League…Dan Butler clubbed two homers in a 2-0 win…Josh Fields pitched the ninth for the save.

The rosters for the 20th anniversary season of the Arizona Fall League were announced this past Wednesday.  Four Sea Dogs and five Red Sox farmhands are among the players initially selected. Each Major League organization will eventually have seven players represented in the league. Right-handed pitchers Brock Huntzinger, Chris Martin and Ryan Pressly along with outfielder Bryce Brentz, all of whom played for the Sea Dogs this season will take part. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Pete Ruiz, who spent the season with the Red Sox Single-A club in Salem, Virginia was selected. The Red Sox farmhands will play for the Surprise Saguaros.

The Saguaros will feature prospects from the Red Sox, Royals, Mets, Cardinals, and Rangers organizations. Sea Dogs’ Coach Dave Joppie and Athletic Trainer Brandon Henry will serve on the staff of the Saguaros.
