THAT WOULD BE A RUBBER GAME: Portland and Trenton play the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Arm & Hammer Park in Trenton, N.J…Last night was Portland’s second shutout of the season – both have been on the road (April 17th at Binghamton)…The Sea Dogs are a ½ game behind the Erie SeaWolves for the best record in the Eastern League…After today’s contest, the two teams don’t meet until June 21-23, a three-game series in Trenton.

NOW THAT’S PITCHING: Righty Anthony Ranaudo (3-0) tossed six scoreless frames, allowing just two hits and fanning a career-high nine batters, leading the Sea Dogs to a 6-0 win over the Thunder on Saturday night…Ranaudo, who was pitching in his home state, earned his third straight win…Portland scored twice in the second and added three runs in the fourth inning on Shannon Wilkerson’s bases-clearing triple…Derrik Gibson went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks…Right-hander Zach Nuding (0-3) took the loss for Trenton, surrendering five runs (four earned) over six innings pitched.
MAYBE THE NAME CHANGE WILL HELP: Arm & Hammer Park, formally known as Waterfront Park in Trenton, has not been kind to Portland…The ‘Dogs have dropped 17 of their last 23 games against the Thunder in New Jersey…Portland won the season series in 2010, taking four of seven.
AND IT CONTINUES: 1B Travis Shaw extended his on-base streak to 20 games, by going 1-for-4 with a double on Saturday…Shaw’s on-base streak is currently the longest in the league, and tied with Altoona’s Andrew Lambo for the longest on-base streak in the Eastern League this season.

BETTER LATER THAN NEVER: The Sea Dogs are now 9-3 since the All-Star and are one game under .500 (15-16) in the last 31 games…Portland and Trenton open up a three-game series tonight…The ‘Dogs haven’t had much success against the Thunder winning just five of 22 so far this season…This marks the final series between the two teams in 2012…The Sea Dogs are 40-40 against all other opponents in the Eastern League in 2012.
FISHER CATS SALVAGE SERIES FINALE 6-5 IN 10: John Tolisano hit an RBI single to right that plated Kenan Bailli and gave the New Hampshire Fisher Cats the 6-5 win in 10 innings over the Sea Dogs…Portland jumped on the board in the first inning when Jeremy Hazelbaker and Marquez Smith hit back-to-back solo home runs in the first inning…Trailing 3-0 in the second the Fisher Cats plated five runs on six hits in the third inning…Portland Tied it in the third with two more runs when Smith and Bryce Brentz hit doubles and a wild pitch allowed Brentz to score from third…Mike MacDonald gave up the five runs in the second, but worked through 4.1 innings in his third start as a Sea Dog…Chris Balcom-Miller delivered three and two-third innings of scoreless, hitless relief…Ryan Pressly took the loss with the run allowed in the 10th.
PITCHING HELPING THE WAY: Over the four-game set with the Fisher Cats, the bullpen was outstanding and allowed just four runs over 19 and two-thirds innings (1.88 ERA)…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 52 of their last 59 innings pitched…Since the All-Star break, they’ve compiled a 3.17 ERA (37 ER/105.2 IP).
TOP OF THE ORDER HAS BEEN TOP NOTCH: Over the past six games, four players have hit in the top three places in the order and combined to go 32-for-91 (.352) with eight home runs, 25 RBI, 27 runs scored, eight doubles, and two triples…Marquez Smith and Jeremy Hazelbaker have led the charge over the three games with 24 of the 32 hits.

The first for the Sea Dogs, a Maine native joins the ‘Dogs in Trenton
TWO MORE GAMES: The Sea Dogs continue their six-game road trip tonight with the second of a three game series against the Trenton Thunder…The trip is the final one before the Eastern League All Star Game…Aaron Kurcz (replaces teammate Chris Hernandez), Bryce Brentz, and Reynaldo Rodriguez will make the trip to Reading to participate in the All-Star Game.
THE FIRST FOR A MAINER: Camden, Maine native Mike MacDonald makes his first start in the Red Sox system this afternoon in Trenton…MacDonald will be the first Maine native to play for the Sea Dogs…The right-hander was pitching with the Somerset Patriots (Atlantic League) before his contract was purchased by the Boston Red Sox and assigned to Portland…Additionally, MacDonald will be the third University of Maine Black Bear to play for the Sea Dogs in franchise history, joining Pete Fisher (2005) and Rusty Tucker (2006).
