Sea Dogs and Thunder in the series finale…No Oscar

Oscar Tejeda was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox last night due to the Kevin Youkilis trade.

The Sea Dogs and Thunder complete their four-game series with the Trenton Thunder on Monday night from Waterfront Park…Portland was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday night due to Friday’s rainout, but won yesterday 6-5.

Last night Outfielder Oscar Tejeda was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox to make room on the 40-man roster…Tejeda hit .253 (167-for-659) with 10 homers and 72 RBI in 174 games with Portland.

Yesterday, the Red Sox signed Right-hander Jason Urquidez from the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League and assigned him to Portland…Urquidez is wearing #29, and will work out of Portland’s ‘pen.  The former standout at Arizona State University (teammates with Dustin Pedroia) was teammates with former Sea Dog Beau Vaughan in Lancaster.  ”We call Beau tweak, because he walks up and down the bullpen the entire game.” said Urquidez (pronounced Ur-key-dez).  ”Beau is great, he’s lost tons of weight, so his routine is to pace from the bullpen pitcher’s mound to the plate until his name is called.” added Urquidez.

Urquidez and Marquez Smith have both joined from the Independent League the past nine days.

Chih-Hsien Chiang leads the franchise with three grand slams…Bryce Brentz hit the franchise’s 46th last night.

The Sea Dogs continue their six-game roadtrip on Wednesday night against the Bowie Baysox from Prince George’s Stadium…Portland suffered an 11-6 loss last night, but Bryce Brentz hit his second career grand slam – the 46th in team history…The ‘Dogs are 7-6 during a 21-game stretch against the Western Division…WWE Superstar Brett “Hit Man” Hart will make a special appearance in BowieI’m really looking forward to just seeing him at the park.  Hopefully I’ll get a few pictures for the blogs.

Sea Dogs and Curve play two…Kalish and the new faces

The Sea Dogs and Curve were postponed on Friday night, and open up their three-game series on Saturday night with a doubleheader from Peoples Natural Gas Field…Portland is 2-1 on the trip, winning on Thursday morning 7-2 at Harrisburg.

After splitting a four-game series in New Hampshire, the Sea Dogs return home to battle the New Britain Rock Cats (Twins affiliate) in a four-game weekend series…Portland lost 8-2 on Friday night, but Reynaldo Rodriguez clubbed his 10th homer of the season – his 9th this month, a new team record for May.

  1. If you missed it, the Sea Dogs were no-hit on Monday night in the series opener.  It was the fifth time in franchise history the ‘Dogs had been no-hit.

  • On the Rise…Matt Barnes continues to dominate in his first professional season…The righty hurled six scoreless innings for Salem on Thursday night, and leads all Red Sox minor league pitchers with a 0.60 ERA and 67 strikeouts.
  • On the decline…Daisuke Matsuzaka was roughed up on Thursday night in Durham, yielding 5 runs (4 earned) over 6.2 IP for Pawtucket.
  • Did you know? Hideki Matsui signed a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays and is currently playing in Triple-A Durham…His official statistics show that his first ever minor league game was 2007 with the Tampa Yankees, but that is wrong…Matsui suited up for the 2006 Trenton Thunder in the first round of the playoffs and played his first ever minor league game against Portland.

Hideki Matsui played his first ever minor league in 2006, but there is no record of it.
