Sox and Yankees meet in Double-A

Earlier today Jeremy Hazelbaker was named the Eastern League Player of the Week…He leads the Sea Dogs with 15 homers.

The Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder open up a three-game series on Monday night from Hadlock Field…Portland has dropped 17 of 22 to the Thunder this season…This series is the final three meetings of the year between the two division rivals.

BETTER LATER THAN NEVER: The Sea Dogs are now 9-3 since the All-Star and are one game under .500 (15-16) in the last 31 games…Portland and Trenton open up a three-game series tonight…The ‘Dogs haven’t had much success against the Thunder winning just five of 22 so far this season…This marks the final series between the two teams in 2012…The Sea Dogs are 40-40 against all other opponents in the Eastern League in 2012.

FISHER CATS SALVAGE SERIES FINALE 6-5 IN 10: John Tolisano hit an RBI single to right that plated Kenan Bailli and gave the New Hampshire Fisher Cats the 6-5 win in 10 innings over the Sea Dogs…Portland jumped on the board in the first inning when Jeremy Hazelbaker and Marquez Smith hit back-to-back solo home runs in the first inning…Trailing 3-0 in the second the Fisher Cats plated five runs on six hits in the third inning…Portland Tied it in the third with two more runs when Smith and Bryce Brentz hit doubles and a wild pitch allowed Brentz to score from third…Mike MacDonald gave up the five runs in the second, but worked through 4.1 innings in his third start as a Sea Dog…Chris Balcom-Miller delivered three and two-third innings of scoreless, hitless relief…Ryan Pressly took the loss with the run allowed in the 10th.

 

PITCHING HELPING THE WAY: Over the four-game set with the Fisher Cats, the bullpen was outstanding and allowed just four runs over 19 and two-thirds innings (1.88 ERA)…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 52 of their last 59 innings pitched…Since the All-Star break, they’ve compiled a 3.17 ERA (37 ER/105.2 IP).

BETTER LATER THAN NEVER: The Sea Dogs are now 9-2 since the All-Star and are at an even .500 (15-15) in the last 30 games…Portland and New Hampshire wrap up the four game series this afternoon…The ‘Dogs have had success against the ‘Cats winning 14 of 21 so far this season…Portland and New Hampshire have five games remaining, all at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester.

BRITTON BOUNCES BACK, ‘DOGS ROLL 9-1: The Portland Sea Dogs jumped on the board with three in the third and tallied six more runs in the 9-1 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats…Drake Britton didn’t have command of his fastball early, but made due with great off-speed deliveries and held the ‘Cats to one run in seven innings…The lefty found his fastball late and finished with eight strikeouts…Matt Spring hit a towering fly ball to left in the third that floated out for a three-run homer and gave the Dogs the 3-0 lead…In the fifth, Reynaldo Rodriguez followed suit and delivered a moonshot, two-run homer to left and put Portland up 6-1…Marquez Smith finished with four hits for the second time in a week, and picked up two RBI in the game as well…Aaron Kurcz delivered two scoreless innings to close out the game on the mound…Rodriguez finished with three hits, three runs score and three runs driven in.

PITCHING HELPING THE WAY: The Sea Dogs five-game win streak is their longest since last June 1-7, when they won six straight games…Portland’s staff has been scoreless in 44 of their last 49 innings pitched…Since the All-Star break, they’ve compiled a 2.91 ERA (31 ER/96.0 IP).

BULLPEN BRILLIANT, OFFENSE RESILIENT, ‘DOGS HOLD ON 10-9 IN 11: The Portland Sea Dogs trailed by six after the first inning, but tied in it the eighth, took the lead in the 11th and held on for good 10-9…Will Latimer started and lasted just two-thirds of an inning and allowed seven runs on five hits…Portland’s offense tallied two runs in the first, but trailed 8-2 after one…The Sea Dogs kept crawling back and tied the game on a Jackie Bradley Jr. three-run homer to left-center in the eighth…In the 11th Reynaldo Rodriguez and Dan Butler hit back-to-back doubles to break the tie, and Butler came around to score ona Peter Hissey single to make it 10-8…The bullpen was outstanding for Portland…Jason Urquidez allowed just one run over four and one-third innings and Caleb Clay and Josh Fields combined to toss five scoreless innings…Brock Huntzinger gave up a run in the 11th but locked down his fourth save.

STOLMY STELLAR, BUTLER SAVES THE DAY IN 3-2 WIN: The Portland Sea Dogs trailed heading into the ninth, but plated two unearned runs in the ninth to take home the 3-2 win over the Fisher Cats. Kevin Howard committed two throwing errors in the ninth that led to two Portland runs scoring. Dan Butler was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and throwing error and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left by Reynaldo Rodriguez…In the bottom of the ninth Butler allowed a runner to reach on a passed ball on a strike out, but the catcher hosed Brad Glenn when he tried to steal second to end the game…Stolmy Pimentel started for the fourth straight time against New Hampshire, and once again was on point…Pimentel went seven and allowed just one run on six hits…Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a solo shot to right-center to put the Sea Dogs up 1-0 in the third.
